You are saying that you put your laptops hard drive into an external case? Does the computer that is connected to the external recognize the hard drive? You should now have a new drive letter for that hard drive. You should just be able to click on the drive and use explorer to find your files. Windows 10??

correct,,it was not recongized as a drive, even though when the Best Buy dude gave me the case,I asked him to check to ensure it did work
I had to go back to best buy, the nerd said the harddrive case was bad,, I did an exchange and got a new one
so now I have that new one connect via USB to my laptop

it is recongized and I can access files,, but its a mess. I cant find my files I had of videos and I dont know to search,I had XP and searching anyhing was easy. I have windows 7 and I dont see a search key...and on the external drive(ex-hardrive) I just get a list of files and other crap.. how do I find anything?

I am not using Win7 so I am not sure how to search, but can you open the external drive and on the top left corner, do you have a section for favorite links? If so, click more and I think you may have a search option. But I will have to leave it to someone running Win7 to give you better advice.

Is there no folder titled video's on the explorer tree?

no theres not any folder labeled videos
it was a shortcut I had on the desktop of my harddrive which used XP, and now that the harddrive is a external drive, I cant access it beause I can't find my desktop

On your now external drive see if you can find one of these folders

    ?:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop or
    ?:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Desktop or possibly
    ?:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop

Where the "?" is the letter of your external harddrive. Hopefully, the shortcut you created for your videos on your XP desktop will be located in one of those. Don't think you'll be able to execute the shortcut to pull up the videos but you should be able to look at it's "properties" to find the folder the video files are in.

Sorry, can't help with searching in Win 7.

plastidust has a good idea. If you find the video shortcut on your old desktop you might try right-clicking it and selecting Properties and seeing if it gives a path to the video folder in the Target line.

In Win7 go to Computer. Open the drive letter for the external (as your screen shot in the other thread shows) and at the top right where it says "Search local drive F:" with a magnifying glass icon, type in type: video and click the magnifying glass.
It should give a list of all video files. You can select any one of them and right-click and choose Open File Location to be taken to the folder that contains the file. Once you know the location of the folder you can put a shortcut to it on your desktop.

Or if you are no longer using the XP drive in a laptop you can just move the folder to the main drive letter folder on the external drive so it is easier to find.

Up in the top right corner is the search box.

To open them, you need to take ownership of the files.

You can also add a 'take ownership' option to the right-click menu if you want to simplify things. You can just right-click on the file and select 'take ownership'.

is there a way to do it to all the files in each file?
if I have the harddrive from my old computer, why cant I just look at it the way it was before, so I see the desktop and know where everything instead of looking through files to find what I need?

Are you checking the box for "replace owner on subcontainers and objects"?

I think it would be right-click on the Users and Documents folder on F: drive.
    Properties.
    Security tab
    Advanced button
    Owner tab
    Edit button
    Other Users and Groups button
Type your user name in box and click Check Names button
    Hit OK
[Not sure what happens here but probably the window where you typed the name in closes and you go back to the list under the Owner tab. You want to highlight your user name and then tick the box for "replace owner on subcontainers and objects" and hit Apply]

This should take over ownership of all the files on your old desktop.
