Just wondering what kind everybody is using and also see maybe some imput people can put on things that they are using. Also for people that come here they can hopefully find this thread and get suggestions on what to use. I am sorry this is a link to a poll, but the limit here is 10. Vote away please

    Done

    and my choices where

    SuperAntispyware
    MalwareBytes
SpywareBlaster (although its not a scanner its pre-emptive protection)

If at some point you can let us know what the top 5 are that maybe good, but as I have mentioned in the past we all have various differing security options, so not one option is right or wrong, its what works for you and your setup that counts as well as USER due diligence, in where they surf and download.

Malwarebytes and Superantispyware, I also run MSE which has its own spyware along with its anti virus.

I was wondering if anybody used or likes microsoft security essentials? Is it still a good thing to use as "real time at this time"?
    Bump as well

From my reading, it appears good for people who do not want to tweak the software. It also takes an extremely long time to run the first full scan. I've read anywhere from 12 to 24 hours. be aware of this before you start to do a full scan.

About 28 minutes in and almost half way with 1st scan. I was just wondering if people liked it as real time protection as well. I was testing some things on real time protection.

I have been running MSE since January, I like it a lot it does not seem to slow the system down unlike most everything else I have tried. Knock on wood so far it has caught anything before it could do me in.

Yeah I was running it and it seemed to slow down the computer. Things Ive seen off google searches just showed it slowing down and good reviews. But I dont know.

I'm gonna go against conventional wisdom here. I seldom if ever have problems with malware, so I don't use any AS program. Some AV programs will handle spyware threats to a point. On occasion I might install and run an AS app, but typically uninstall it after the scan. This might not be advisable for the average user, but a reasonable option for a savvy user.

    Hi

I would not disagree with that at all, while AS apps give a level of protection if the resident type or double checking in a manual scan in the case of freebies find things and give a sense of protection.

If you safe surf and download as well as keeping all apps upto date then in the main you are doing all you can to be protected, average to pro users know what should or should not be on their PC, its startups, files and general feel of usability, novice users and those that dont safe surf/download, should always have AS apps and well as AV installed and updated always.

Malwarebytes and Spywareblaster as the leaders so far, two good apps, supprised to see less folk supporting Ad-aware and Spybot, but for me those two apps have falled behind in recient years, Ad-Aware more due to its reliance on listing tracking cookies as bad to scare the user, my personal opinion only, maybe better apps now.

I'm going to agree with Halo on this . As I don't use any of the listed ones either.. My AV does that as well, and I also agree on the tracking cookies.. Just a lot of unnecessary scares... I am sure a bad cookie shows up once in a while, but I, personally, haven't had any..

I do believe that maintanance is most important. Keep those Temp. Int. Files cleaned out... JMO, tho.;)

My first scan with MSE on a 300G drive was way under that number maybe 30 minutes which pleased me no end, I ran CA for about 15 years then switched to KIS which was also a fast but pay program in every way MSE gets a big thumbs up from me!

Spyware Doctor. Their definitions database is one of the biggest is it not?

  20. Caliban

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

I'd like to suggest that Avast! Free and/or Professional be added to the mix, as it now includes real time spyware protection.

I second those 2 additions. Real Time is a must and I wouldn't use an app without real time or some sort of sliding signature feature built into the program. Spyware/malware morphs, the app need to be able to pick up on that.
