I have been considering on not using AVG anymore because I've been noticing it is a bit of a resource hog even when it is just sitting in the icon tray. Can anyone recommend one that doesn't use as much memory or even one that doesn't constantly stay on? I don't really need live protection because anything that I download gets virus scanned anyhow.

If you just want AV and not a malware detector as well, there are three: Avast, Threatfire and Rising Antivirus.
If you search here, you will find comments about all three. Try one, if you don't like it, uninstall and try another. What works for me may not work well for you.

A few days ago I would have recommended RisingAV also, but not now. It needs work... ALOT of work.

I strongly recommend Avira's free AntiVir. I've been using it for years as my main AV on my home PC and I couldn't be happier. Download it from here. It does have a splash screen that pops up every day or so when it auto-updates, but you just click OK and it's gone. Not a big deal for excellent free virus protection, but for some reason, some people have a huge attitude about it.....

Yup, if I could edit my post, I'd put a strike through on Rising AV.

MrKlown, uninstall AVG 8 then instal it using the custom not the default install. Uncheck the toolbar and the safe site checker. You might also consider unchecking the email scanner if you never download email to your computer. I think you will discover installing it this way, it is not a resource hog. I have it on two computers so far and have noticed no slow downs.
