I am currently running Comodo Internet Security with Virus Defense disabled for firewall and AVG AV Free 8.5. I tried to update AVG to 9.0, but it wouldnt install with removing Comodo first.
So now I'm re-evaluating which AV to run. The easiest option seems to be removing AVG and enabling Comodo, but I would rather go with the best option not the easiest. Any recommendations here? My system is an older (slower) laptop with XP. I'm not completely happy with the Commodo/AVG setup, it seems to slow the system down. Thanks

You could try using separate firewall and antivirus programs.

PC Tools Firewall Plus is a MG Pick and this is what I have been using.
Here are the latest firewall tests results at Matousec.com
PC Tools Firewall Plus got a very high score.

Avira Antivir free may use less system resources and has slightly higher detection rates but does not provide all the protection that Avast! free has.
I recently switched from Avira to Avast! free because Avira manual update was often impossibly slow or would not work, however, Avira will reliably do an automatic daily update. You can also do a manual update after downloading the latest definition file.

For antivirus product evaluation, I like to refer to the latest
AV-Comparitives report. (Open the PDF file)
Be sure to look at scan times/rates, number of false positives as well as virus detection rates.

I would like to see more discussion here about (free) antivirus and other security programs along with user's personal experiences with these apps.

Sorry, but it is my understanding that Comodo Internet Security is a combination of antivirus AND firewall.:-o

    He did mention that:
I was just offering an alternative approach. I am NOT an authority on any of these matters. Just making a suggestion.:)

quite a few AV/suites will NOT run effectively with anything else installed. however, if you're still deciding which suite to purchase, you are best served if you test each of them for about a week, uninstall, then install the next. if you fall in love with the first one, then that's the one for you.

personally, i chose KIS 2010 (Kaspersky) based on trials of the top 3 suites listed at toptenreviews.com; there are many other review site (google for them) you can look at for objective side-by-side comparisons that will include cost, ease of use, included features, how well each feature works, customer support, etc.

it's a chore, but worth doing to get the best quality you can afford. i'll leave my personal opinion, of which is best, out of this (unless directly asked) because opinions are like apple trees...the orchard is full of them. LOL

I uninstalled AVG and enabled the AV portion of Commodo. The computer responds way faster now, time will tell if the virus protection is worthwhile. I seem to remember bad reviews with the Comodo AV when they first turned the Firewall into Internet Security suite.

CIS is a very respectable suite IMO, not the best by any means, but far superior than most.

I always reccommend Kaspersky(Paid) or Avira(free) AV with comodo firewall.

But if your happy and it runs ok i see no need to change.

Hello, RenegadeT, :wave My advice, would be to go with AVG-9. Now, that is what I am using, and I noticed you
You may have to un-install 8.5 and then install 9.0 to get it to install.

I had Trend Micro, and had to totally remove it in order for AVG 9 to download and install.. Two AV will fight, for sure;) Not a pretty site LOL

Best of luck whatever you decide to do ;)

I recently installed Avast! free and I have Malwarebytes Anti-malware (paid) with active protection enabled.

Do you think the two conflict with each other?
    Avast! has anti-spyware included.

probably not, the real conflict comes from having 2 anti-virus and/or firewall programs running/installed (i wasn't clear enough when i posted that; i meant strictly conflicts between 2 AV and/or FW programs, not anti-malware) some security software (AV/FW) can conflict with specific anti-malware programs, but it's definitely on an individual basis and doesn't cause the type of conflicts that running/installing two AV or FW do.

occasionally 2 or more different anti-malware programs will conflict with one or the other, but if you're not having any issues, then yours are fine.

I did understand that. When I suggested a 'separate' firewall, I meant a program that is solely a firewall.

    @DomLuc
Also, I was still working on my first response when your reply posted.
I did not see your first response until After my first response had posted.
So we sort of crossed paths.

The CIS app looks very interesting, especially after reading the positive comments from you and RenegadeT. I was using BOClean untill it was no longer supported as a separate free program.

How did you determine the RAM usage?

Could you comment on what the defense+ mode is?

    Thanks
