So what's with Intel's new line of 'unlocked' chips? Are these better for OC than a standard Core i? Specifically my question relates to the Core i7-875 unlocked and the i7-930 as seen below.

Buying a new CPU this weekend to get started on my new build which will be specifically for gaming/video. Coupled with an Asus motherboard, which of these would be more versatile for OC?

I'd go with the i7 930 as it has 8 HT threads and has the 1366 newer socket. I have OC'd this puppy to 3.8GHz so far and almost nothing can touch it. I do folding@home which can take advantage of all 8 virtual cores, I mean they are all pinned so be prepared for lots of heat.

Now, the only thing that I can't talk about is gaming and as of today I don't think any game can utilize all 8 HT threads yet or for that matter 4 cores, wait for someone else to reply as to gaming. What do you mean about video? Conversion etc.? I doubt it would make a big difference. It would be fun to OC an unlocked CPU for once but I wouldn't spend the money on it.

BTW, last I heard was that MicroCenter in the US is only asking for $200 for a 920/930 though you have to pick it up.

The i7-875 has the same 8HT and 4 cores as the 930. Both are probably way more processor than I need tbph, but I want to make sure I can throw anything I like at it for the next few years. I've been doing a little web surfing trying to find the differences with the 'unlocked' chips and ran across THIS interesting video :D As far as video goes, I don't do anything really heavy, but I do run dual monitors and tend to multitask game or game/video applications. I.E. game open 1 screen and streaming video on the other, or different games open on both screens. Fortunately we have a Micro Center right up the street so picking up isn't an issue, and they have the unlocked 875 for $250 :D

Very interesting indeed! Even easier OC'ing than the 9xx
