Which DVD writer works with MKV files & vista?

WMP, and BurnAware free edition did not work.

I am trying to put a MKV video file on a DVD. I can not get my DVD writers to put it on a DVD.

 

An MKV video is actually a container of sorts for video and audio files as well as subtiltles and other extras. Their used mainly by the Anime set but others use them as well. The main purpose of an MKV file is to put together a bunch of files for you to use depending on your prefrences. So it may contain the video in avi form along with two audios, one japanese and one english and two subs japanese and english as well. This is so you can make your own, if you like japanese audio with english subs you make that, if you prefer no subs with english dubbed audio you make that.

So what you want to do is to create an avi from the MKV with the parts you want and then process the avi into DVD your normal route. For more standard files like divx or xvid video and ac3 or mp3 audio you can use Virtual Dub Mod, it will load the avi and allow you to choose which audio you want. For more stubborn files use AlltoAvi, it will handle stranger video and audio like x264 with ogg audio files.

To see whats inside download MKVToolnix and use its MKV Merge Gui function. Its actually for creating MKV files but if you open one with it you can find out which audio is english. There's another tool MKV Extract GUI which you can unzip into the tioolnix folderr and make a shortcut for it to the desktop. It will actually allow you to remove just what you want as separate files (avi video/ogg audio) and deal with them separately then put them together with Virtual Dub Mod (this works best if you have a nomal divx or xvid video but an audio thats strange, I convert the audio to mp3 or ac3 then import into V Dub Mod).
