Dell dimension 8200, with XP, 6 years old.

I get a black screen with the nototation fan failure.
I have opened the case and cleaned the insides - it needed it badly.
When restarted I hear no fans running. How long should I wait before I hear the fan? How do I tell which fan has failed?

    Within 5 seconds.

Leave the side of your case open, the press the power, and see which fan stops working.

It is NOT the CPU fan. If that were dead, the computer would turn off immediately. It probably is not the power supply fan either. You probably have 1 or 2 case fans. It will be one of those. If there is only one case fan, then you know which one needs replacing.
