Which is the better anti-virus program, Avast or AVG free? I currently have
both running and my computing life is starting to suck. My system has slowed
by half, and one of these must go.

Well if you have both running together then your PC will "SUCK" as both will be live scanning the same files and slowing your PC to a crawl!

Major rule is to only have 1 antivirus application installed at one time, so uninstall one of them, either will do as they are both good, but only have 1, this rule also goes for Firewalls and resident scanning Antispyware applications.

Good guide for you to read through How to Protect yourself from malware!

Picking one is a personal choice as to which you feel most comfortable with. I have used AVG for years and find it the better of the two programs.

Not even that. If you run a scan with Avast, it will cannabilize AVG. Same with AVG vs. Avast.

    One installed only.

Noooo zbd21's statment is correct in that you can install multiple AVs SO long as one is not set to live/resident background scannng, 2 or more live or resident scanning will head you into compatability and speed issues, but warning or nota bene on this is that be careful of which AVs you install if you do use multiples as some can flag up a virus warning in the other as many security apps dont like each other and flag certain files as virii, altho these are antimalware apps but Counterspy is flagged in EMCO as a trojan as case in point last I noticed, same can happen with AVs.

But the 1 AV rule per PC is aimed at users who just install and may not know how to disable live/resident scanning in the other app as its crucial, which is why for novices its best practice to just have one.

Personally I have never seen the need to have two installed or would ever advise it for the reasons of compatability and false flagging of other security apps files, especially when the free online scans are a next best second opinon option.

I have used both, seperately, and each has it's plusses and minuses; AVG has a smaller resource footprint, but doesn't have stellar detection rates (it's good; Avast is better in this area)... Avast has better detection, but the GUI can be tricky to navigate at first, and I've had Avast run away with my system resources on occasion. I still like 'em both, and use 'em both. But as a rule of thumb: 1 active antivirus program, 1 active antispyware program, 1 active firewall; otherwise conflicts and resources become issues.

    Call it how you like.

My experience says your advice is wrong.

its not practical to use 2 main antivirus, waste of space and resources, even if one is inactive ... u can use supplemental independent AVs that dont run in the background like "removeit" or mcafee "stinger" in my case i have a dual OS on one hard drive, one avast for one partition and AVG on the other....but i find AVS(active virus shield) from kapersky on my other pc as most effective. you see i have a usb flash drive that i use on other pcs, in which case always gets infected with virus and i scan it with avg, avast and avs from which almost 100% AVS detects and heals the virus, AVG also detects but cant heal some of the viruses while avast detects but misses some.
