I would like to know in everybodys opions which is the best Anti-Virus Program out there. And don't just pick one just because it is for free. Purchase or Free which is the better one.
I use Nortons 2003 and have no complaints about it,updates are almost daily and it catches virus's deletes them or quatines them.

I use symantec/norton at home myself and have no complaints.

I have run avast and avg on friends computers, both of which are free, and also see no problems with them.

It really just comes down to personal oppinion I think. What ever you are the most comfortable using.

I used AntiVir before switching to Avast. Avast may hog RAM, but it is more thorough than AntiVir, and if you go to the AntiVir forum it cetainly helps to speak german (which I do), but the reponse time to any queries can be non-existent.......However it is a very good AV.:)

I'm tired of looking at rankings from biased users ;).
So here are some real antivirus rankings:

Shake Communications Pty Ltd. has released the results of an independent study of the top 20 virus-scanning products on the market. ... The complete results appear in the September issue of the Shake Security Journal...

The study tested each product in a "hot zone" of 16,000+ viruses ... Shake says that few of the programs performed consistently across all virus categories. ... Here is a capsule of the survey's results, in terms of the percentage of viruses detected. Thanks to Simon Johnson for forwarding this table, not available in the cited public sources.

    1 Anywhere Anti-Virus 99%
    2 F-Secure 94%
    3 Norton Anti-Virus 93%
    4 Find Virus (Dr Solomon's) 93%
    5 Inoculan AntiVirus 93%
    6 Avast 93%
    7 McAfee VirusScan 91%
    8 Thunderbyte 91%
    9 LANDesk Virus Protect 90%
    10 Sophos 88%
    11 AntiViral Toolkit Pro 87%
    12 House Call 86%
    13 ViruSafe 79%
    14 Vet 73%
    15 Virus & Macro Buster 2% [14]

What you seem to perceive as bias, is simply having used a program and basing your evaluation on the personal experience you have had, no more no less. People are free to make up their mind what to use...full stop.;)

So you think these guys are unbiased, eh...............

The tests were unbiased (all programs were tested using the same criterion). I doubt very seriously if you can say that about your eval of certain programs.

And no my perception of bias is: allowing your limited knowlegde of the various programs to get in the way of how each performed in an equally tough environment. I respect that you have your own opinion but lets be fair to the gent who asked the question. The list is just how the antivirus programs performed in an equally hot environment.

Thanks for the review link. Most interesting.

I'm not sure what version of AntiVir Personal Edition (AVPE) as reviewed ... but this is a clip of the review content.

With the exception of the no automatic update comment, I completely agree. It does a good job. The current version includes AntiVir Scheduler, which can be set to to an automatic update. For example, I have Scheduler set to start the Internet Updater at 9:00 a.m. every day.

Large update file size is a problem for slower Internet connections. I understand that an incremental (smaller file size) update will be included within the next several months.
