Hi everyone. I read and couldn't find the info I needed.

I would like to add more memory to my computer but I don't know what kind I need. I didn't realize that there is so many different kinds.

I am running XP Prof with Service Pack 1 on my AMD Antholon xp 1500-. with 1.35 GHz and 256 MB of RAM. Where would I look to find out what kind of memory is in my computer? I figured I would add another 256 MB to what I already have. Can someone help me?

    Thanks bunches!

Easiest way to do it is to check with the manufacturer of your computer. They will have the information listed about your system, as far as how much RAM you can have and what type you need. Also, you might want to consider updating XP, Service Pack 2 fixes a lot of security issues.

That is easier said then done, lol. It's a barebones that my ex bought online. I know that the Mainboard is MSI but that is all I know. Do you know if there is someplace on the computer I can look to find any of this info?

Actually, there is no need to open the computer up...

    Just run this program:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/EVEREST_Free_Edition_d4181.html

It will tell you anything you want to know about your computer. It will tell you what type of RAM you have, and what speed it is running at. That will be all the info you need to buy the correct RAM.

Ok, great program! I love it. This is what Everest told me about my memory. What do I need to know when looking at the memory sticks...
For example : 256 DDR 266 MHz memory module PC2100

will this fit my computer? I don't want to spend money buying the wrong thing... Thanks so much for your help!

You'll need DDR SDRAM. Any Speed greater than or equal to PC2100 or DDR266 will be sufficient. Right now, DDR400 (PC3200) RAM costs as low as any of them so you might as well get it.

I don't see anything that saying the maximum size you can install per slot. You'll want to find that before you go and buy anything. It will say something like "Max Module Size".

Here is a link to memory that will be as inexpensive as any you can find:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ce=&MaxPrice=&SubCategory=147&Submit=Property

Depending on your max module size, I might suggest this one:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227037

    $36 for a 512Mb stick of PC3200.
