I was wondering which operating system works best for gaming?

I'm thinking Win98SE. Pretty much every game will run on that, providing you have the other system requirements that the game requires.
Wait for more posts though. Others may have different suggestions :)

Sarcasm aside, :D , get XP if you can afford it. Plays most everything with it's compatibility mode

    To play solitaire.

XP is the easiest to us, most stable, reliable operating system to date. No brainer.

While Vlad and others strongly believe that M$ products are produced in the depths of Hell by the Devil himself (Just playin with ya Vlad! )

I would go with Windows XP... much more stable than earlier OS' and very easy to use...

if you are feeling crazy, you could go with a Linux OS, but it will take a bit longer to learn if you are used to Microsoft

    ( I think I am now in the correct thread!:D )

Hummmm. I see a lot of the others said XP.
Has anyone got a DOS game to run in XP ???? If so, share the secret:) I picked 98SE because the original question was "Which is best for gaming". I was looking at the question from an install and compatability standpoint.:D

Unfortunately it's been many years since a DOS based game has been released. When someone asks about gaming they usually don't worry about DOS games cause they are 1. outdated 2. require minimal hardware and 3. no one makes new DOS games anymore.

As for the OS, go with a clean install of Windows XP.

Some can with XP Pro, my wife plays Duke Nukem 3d all the time, but someone released a Windows hack for it.. Thats your best bet, otherwise, not too many DOS games will play without a lot of work, a 3rd party hack or a patch (unlikely)

Grab VDMsound You can play most DOS based games and includes support for current videocards. There's also dosbox , not as good for games.

    XP is the one

although some games did stop working under xp. and some I had to download a patch to work with xp. I still prefer xp it does not break down and give me the blue screen at all

I never did get that compatibility option to work for me.

    Never......
