Hi guys I just built a gaming PC for 1300 bucks and I would really like some opinions on what anti virus, anti malware, other suites, to keep my PC up to speed. I guess I'm looking for a list of "core" programs you guys ALWAYS buy (or freeware i guess) when you make a new computer or you wipe yours. I'm really rusty on this havn't surfed major geeks in over 15 years. Thanks I really appreciate your time P.S. would really like one of the major geek moderators to let me know what they use!:)

    Hi

As Maxwell has posted thats oor core list of great apps that many use, the thing is many of us like differing apps so you will get a multitude of answers, none are wrong and all are right as thats what a user feels works great for them.

    Me and as you asked....

    Windows 10 64bit
    Inbuilt Windows defender as Antivirus
Spywareblaster -good for blocking nasty known websites
Superantispyware - good 3rd party on demand scan for malware
Malwarebytes - good 3rd party on demand scan for malware

This works for me but may not be great for all... we have options on what is good for our own security. One other thing is if you use a router or wireless secure that also, password the SSID and also the router admin settings.

Keep Windows upto date as well as apps and safe surf is the best security, basically learn what should be on your PC and look at the startup list of apps and know what they are and do, many do not need to be there, but once you know what should be on your PC you have a better idea of what should not.

    A really great read http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44525

    Hi atrey4u.
15 years is a long time to be away. Here are a few things to get you started.

How to optimize that new computer

Keeping the drives clean and free of junk buildup is always helpful. I use all of these.
    CCleaner Slim
also this, not from the same publisher:
    CCEnhancer

    Wise Disk Cleaner

Based on most reviews, REVO is the best uninstaller for cleaning up leftover registry entries and files.
    Revo Uninstaller
REVO does not "see" 64-bit programs, so for those you can use either IObit Uninstaller or GeekUninstaller.
