Which Router to use?

I know, I know it's not the 'right' forum, but I didn't know where to go. It's not a trouble shooting issue, which brings up a suggestion I've been considering.

So first my question. I have sat internet, which limits me to 10 GB a month. I'm getting huge, violent spikes in the connection which I have a sneaking suspicion are due to a too close neighbor jacking wifi. There are many reasons I suspect this, all of which are not for this forum.

The wifi I'm using to split the Internet now has unfortunately insufficient security to protect the Wifi. I'm wonder what router the wise and all knowing users here suggest? I've looked at NetGear, but the reviews are all over the place. One I looked at on NewEgg and Amazon both shared reviews that ranged from 5 to 1 star and couldn't decide if it was the best piece of tech ever, or the worst. (WGR614). So, I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion?

Second, my suggestion, to the admins. The forum could really use a General Computer discussion for questions where you're unsure where it should go. Say in the case of something that seems to be a hardware issue, but might be a driver issue and if you post in the wrong forum, the wrong person will see it and you won't get the right help. Or like this, it's not an actual problem, but you're looking for advice on a purchase. Because the Lounge is supposed to be off the topic of computers, mostly.

    Thanks guys.

Does your existing router have a Wireless MAC listing where you can "Allow" only those you input? You'd have to survey all your own wireless devices and get the MAC identifier for each and enter into the listing.
This would prevent casual usage, not a determined hacker.

The current router I have is a piece of junk which I can't configure at all. I've attempted every possible method to get to it, but it just refuses to even acknowledge that it exists for any setting changes.

I've even asked here, and no one had any ideas.

    Hi

What model and make is your current router as it may allow you to use at least WEP or WPA encryption to secure your connection?

I do use Netgear routers and they are fine as are Linksys.

What I have now is a WF716-CAPR. I believe Gigafast makes it. But while it's acceptable if all you're doing is splitting a connection, it's not secure at all. The manual gives a default IP address, but it doesn't work. I've tried both Wired and Wireless connections to reach it.
