Which to download/install?

Should I download every recommended Driver update for my Dell laptop according to the Dell website? Things like BIOS, I was told not to install a Driver update if nothing is wrong with my current BIOS (overheating laptop, etc.).

Could someone offer some guidance here, preferably if you have a Dell computer? Thanks very much.

 

Updates are written for a reason, too keep you from having a problem. I personally update any driver that has an update and never had a problem, having said that i dont update firmware on dvd drives. Optional updates is non critical updates, your choice. ed

 

Would there be a problem in accidently downloading a driver update that is not supposed to be installed for a particular application? Is there anywhere that I could read better descriptions on before/after results or why a driver is updated. The Dell driver update descriptions are a general blanket description for each one, no matter if it's BIOS, Chipset, Video, etc. driver updates. I think this is why I'm hesitant to update, beacause I have no idea why it's being updated.

 

When you go to dell you need to enter your service tag number off of your pc, its found on the case, its a black stickon sticker, that lets dell know what drivers your pc takes, i personally trust this system 100%, and have never had a mistake from dell. ed

 

I know, and I set up an account on the dell site that saves all that information for me, I just have to login. The thing I noticed though was when I go to the driver updates section recommended for my particular laptop, I am also seeing driver updates for XPS (I have an Inspiron), chipset that I don't have, etc. Those are just the obvious, I don't know all abou tthe inner workings, what I do and don't have as far as insides go, so how would someone like me know which is for me and which isn't?

 

Just use your online update program, will scan and show you what you need. ed
