Which version of Java Update do I install?

I was given an older laptop that has, basically, sat in a closet since it was purchased a few years ago.
It is a Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz, running WinXP Pro (SP3), with 2 Gig of RAM.
I am almost finished with the updates (Drivers, Win Updates, etc), but I can not determine which Java Update to install.

Java was never updated, so the version of Java installed is "J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6".

Please help me determine which of these updates to apply, after I uninstall the old version of Java!
(Am I required to stick with Java's SE version, because that is what was originally installed?):

Java's SE Runtime Environment (v7.0 Update 3 for Windows 32-bit)
    jre-7u3-windows-i586.exe

    or

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (v6.0 Update 31 for Windows 32-bit)
    jre-6u31-windows-i586.exe

Thank you all, in advance, for your time and assistance.

on my XP Pro I'm running Java 7 update 3...no reason it shouldn't work for you, too, I wouldn't think :)

Another thing...uninstalling older versions of Java are sometimes problematic. Try the program JavaRA for removal if you run into problems.

Goldenskull I can't follow the rules

i would go with either 64bit version with 64bit windows or 32bit for 32bit windows it depends on witch version of windows you got.

I've removed Java from all my computers except one. Currently we have seven in the house and they run Windows 2000, XP (Pro and Home) and 7 (Home premium).
Are you sure you need Java? So far six of our computers don't seem to miss it and it has been more than a year since I removed it.

Thank you to everyone who responded.

I understand that, since I have the 32 Bit version of WinXP, I must use the 32 Bit version of Java (either the SE version v7.0 update 3, or the JRE version v6.0 update 31),
and some of the sites I visit don't seem to work right without Java.

I really only have one question, and that is this:
Do I need to install the SE version of Java, ie: Java's SE Runtime Environment (v7.0 Update 3) "jre-7u3-windows-i586.exe",
simply because my laptop originally came with the *J2SE* Runtime Environment.

or should I install Java's regular Runtime Environment, which is Java Runtime Environment (JRE v6.0 Update 31)
    "jre-6u31-windows-i586.exe"

Thank you all again for your time and your help.

They're both similar in size, from what I recall, I'm using 7.3. Whichever you decide on, ensure the old one is overwritten or uninstalled.

You'll probably find that very few of your websites actually use Java for anything other than very specific services.

Whenever I start a browser session, I always check that Java (everything excl. Flash and GoogleEarth actually) is turned off. If I need any of the disabled plugins during a session (probably less than monthly for Java, recently there's been a Flash alt. for that even), I simply enable the needed plugin then refresh the page; once done, I disable it afterwards.
