Which Version of Windows 7 should I install in New PC ? 32 bit OR 64 bit ?

    I am getting a new pc from Dell & it comes with 64 bit Windows -7 ( Home Premium ) which I am upgrading to Ultimate Version.

    I am not sure if I should get the 64 bit version or not. I am not sure if all of my applications would work with 64 bit. Do I need to change my applications to 64 bit too or old 32 bit applications work fine with 64 bit OS ?

    The specs are as follows.

    Intel Core i7-2600 Processor (3.4GHz, 8MB Cache)
    12GB DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz Memory
    500GB SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive with Native Command Queuing
    1GB ATI Radeon HD5770 Graphics
    Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1200 Hybrid Analog/Digital TV Tuner

    with all of that ram and the large files you'll be creating and editing from your TV capture card, I would recommend sticking with 64-bit Windows. Most 32-bit programs work just fine on 64-bit Windows, so that isn't really a concern.

    P.S. Why are you upgrading to Ultimate. Is there some specific feature in ultimate that you have to have that isn't in Home Premium?

    Hi

    Ultimate really offers you nothing the home users will need over Home Premium, I run both at home and dont miss or need the extra stuff Ultimate adds.

    As for x64 software then you will be ok, as most current versions of many apps will work in x64 Windows as Windows x64 has legacy built in as it has 2 Program Files folders one for x86 apps and one for x64 apps, so you should be fine.

    If any of the apps you use have a dedicated x64 version then use that as it will run more smoothly, say Photoshop or Office 2010 for instance are and have x64 versions and compatibility, but you will be ok, just depends on how old the app is but Compatibility Mode will help with some.
