Which way to Programmer Preschool???

I need a place to start. I'm building my own webpage, but don't have money for Dreamweaver, or even a cheap program. I'm using open source programs. PHP is available. I don't know any programming language. I got a giant book on PHP and MySQL, but it assumes the reader has knowledge of some programming language.

Apparently, I need to be able to work in PHP and HTML to make anything but the most basic of changes. I am willing to go to the library and research, can anyone recommend any basic books? Anything specific or just pick a book and start reading?

Thanks in advance for your patience and reply. I promise to find some books and read more before I return with more questions.

Just an update, thanks for the referrals, and the responses! I got a few books at the library, and am learning little bits. There's a way on my website builder to work in wysiwyg or html editor, and I'm starting to prefer the html editor! never thought I'd say that!
