All Linux Distributions come with their own boot managers; either GRUB or LILO. Both are perfectly capable of handling a dual/multi-boot system configuration.

If you are planning to completely wipe the drive to install Linux or configure a dual-boot, then the installer will handle this for you. You just have to tell the installer what you are doing.

I am not familiar with the install procedure for Mepis Linux; as I have never installed it.

See this article for configuring dual-boot Windows/Linux systems: Configuring A Dual-Boot Windows2000/XP & Linux System

This is just one method of setting up a dual-boot Windows/Linux system. Most newer Linux distributions handle dual-boot configuration pretty seamlessly. However, the installer will re-write the boot sector of the boot drive; making it a little more difficult to undo the dual-boot configuration in the future.

I currently have Mepis installed as a dualboot along with W2K...but Windows MUST be installed first (I assume that you already have it loaded, so leave it alone.)
Boot the Mepis from your CD as a liveCD. Once you try out the program and decide you want to install it, simply click the install button on the upper left side of the screen. This will bring up QParted (the partition editor). Select a size from your existing Windows partition (you should have at least 10 gb) and you will be prompted to confirm that you want to install Mepis. Mepis will again prompt you to ask that you want to install a bootloader (allowing a dualboot). Click yes to proceed. You will then see a screen to set up the most commonly used services (cupsys for printing, guarddog for firewall, etc.) You will then need to supply a workgroup name to share files with Windows...usually MSHome or Workgroup.
The last screen is to select a user account for yourself as well as a setting for the administrator (root) passwork (be sure to set a different name for root to avoid problems).
That's it. When you reboot, Mepis is generally your first choice (#1) and Windows will be the second choice (#2).
