    Hi,
Ok, i have a old computer that was given to me

    specs:
    6 gig Hd,
    64megs of RAM
i THINK its 366 mhz intel
    Cd drive + floppy

Ok what i want to do is remove windows ME and install a distro of linux.

Im not too sure about which linux i want but it needs to be user friendly and not too complex ( im installing it, running it, testing and telling a friend about the advatages of it )
Any suggestions would be great on that.

Do i need to format my HD or partiton it ?

All so any advice would be great and much welcomed.

    Thanks in advance
    Peanut

Im not a linux person but you could take a look here.
You don't have a large HD so I'd reccomend wiping it completly (format) and only having linux on it (NOT dual boot)

I would recommend Fedora 5. I recently set up an old box almost identicle to yours and knew nothing about linux. Fedora 5 works great though and Im having a lot of fun learning as I go.

I just downloaded the 5 (iso) disks of Fedora 5 and wiped out everything by formating it then.

If you restart your computer in "DOS" mode you can then run the program FDISK. When FDISK runs you will see an option to delete partitions. Once you've deleted the partition, and re-booted you will be starting with a "clean" partition table. If you've never been a Unix or Linux person, the friendliest distro that I've ever seen is the UBUNTU Live CD ( version 6.06). It can be run entirely from the CD, or you may also install it. The ISO image fits on a single 700MB ( 80 minute) CD and includes the openOffice suite, DVD and CD authoring packages, GIMP graphics packages and FireFox for browsing. Since 80% of most Linux distributions are never used, you'll be amazed at how much is packed on this sweetheart. It also supports AMD64 bit as well as Intel. The driver base is just short of phenomenal, so getting stuff to work is very easy. In spite of the name, UBUNTU is not from Africa - it's from Europe - specifically the Isle of Man.:)
