White box with red cross inside appears instead of image

    Hello,

I use eBay to sell tartan products. Recently I've noticed that whenever I generate the invoice/packing slip for a customer, a white box with a small red cross inside appears instead of the company logo. When I print off the invoice/packing slip, the box is printed instead of the logo.

In an attempt to solve the problem I've updated Java and searched for computer updates on Microsoft Update (there are no updates to install apart from a few optional ones that are unrelated to Internet Explorer), but this hasn't helped. I've also typed search terms into Google, but I'm put off by the specific questions that people ask, as well as by the number of solutions that are presented, so I thought I'd try and get some help here.

Please can somone let me know where to go from here. I can provide you with any computer information you may require in order to solve the problem.

    Thanks,

    Jack.

Since you failed to mention both the version of IE and the version of Windows you are running, I chose IE 9

You can use the drop down box on the right near the top to select a different version of IE.

By the way, you do not need Java to see pictures on websites. I do not have Java installed on most of the computers in my home.
On the one computer it is installed on, I have it set to disable in the browsers for security reasons.

search Microsoft.com or internet for answers to this. It's a commonly asked question.

Also trying clearing IE cache (Tools>Internet Options>Delete Browsing History (depending on which version of IE you are using)>Temporary files is by far the most important (largest). This sometimes helps.

Hi to both of you. Sorry about the late reply, I've been busy over the last few days.

Plodr, I am running Internet Explorer 8, and my operating system is Windows XP. I checked out the page you sent me the link for, changing to 'Internet Explorer 8' in the drop-down menu, and none of the suggestions worked (I didn't try the suggestion to do with Active X because I don't think that applies). The page did say the problem may be due to a link being broken, and that it's the site's responsibility to fix it, so maybe that's what's going on.

Dumb_Question, I'll clear the cache now and let you know what the outcome is.

    Hi again,

Dumb_Question, I deleted the browsing history, but I'm still getting a white box with a small red cross inside on the invoice/packing slip. Do you have any more suggestions? If anyone else reading this has some ideas please feel free to post a reply. I'm going to look for a solution on Google for a bit now.

    Hi again,

I've got round to sorting out the problem by following the page I left a link for in my last post, but I'm having problems and was wondering if someone can help me.

I'm currently on step three of the resolution section having backed up the registry. When I expand the Extension subkey, no subkeys appear underneath for me to right-click and delete.

Please can someone let me know for sure if this means I can move on to the next step because this step simply doesn't apply to me.

    Thanks,

    Jack.

Yes. I have no extensions installed so I have only the default entry in the right pane.

I also have nothing under MIME. If you have nothing there either, it simply means you have not changed anything in the registry and that is not what is causing the problem.

Then you do need to check on ActiveX filtering because that might be causing the problem.

    Hi plodr,

Thanks for your reply. Like you, I have nothing under Extension and MIME apart from the default entries, so the problem is being caused by something else.

Please can you explain to me how I can find out if ActiveX filtering is causing the problem. I clicked on the link you left me, selected Internet Explorer 8, but the guidance I was looking for wasn't there.

If somebody else is reading this thread, knows what I have to do, and plodr has yet to reply, please feel free to leave a message.

    Thanks,

    Jack.

    Tools/Internet Options then Security tab
click Custom level, and scroll down to ActiveX controls and plug-ins: (there are 14 or 15 different entries to look over)
Allow Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls - select Enable.
Allow Internet Explorer to Display video and animation on a webpage that doesn't use external media player - select Enable.
Allow Internet Explorer to Download signed ActiveX controls select Enable, or Prompt if you want to be notified each time this happens.
Allow Internet Explorer to Run ActiveX controls select Enable, or Prompt if you want to be notified each time this happens.
Allow Internet Explorer to Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting select Enable, or Prompt if you want to be notified each time this happens.
    Click Ok twice.

Me, I'd do the prompt and check that page. If it fixes the issue, keep those settings. If it doesn't fix the issue, go back to disabling ActiveX.

Alternative: add the site to the safe zone.

    Hello,

Thanks for your reply, and sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you. I tried what you suggested, but it hasn't fixed the problem, so I've disabled ActiveX. What can I try next? I didn't try the alternative you offered of adding the site to the safe zone. Please let me know.

    Talk to you soon,

    Jack.

    Sorry, I'm out of ideas.
Have you tried a different browser?

    Hello,

That's a shame. I haven't tried a different browser, but I want to concentrate on getting the logo to appear again using Internet Explorer because it has appeared many times by using said browser, and because I don't really want to use another browser.

It may be possible that the problem is to do with eBay rather than my computer settings. I'll sign into my account later on a different computer, and this will tell me where the problem lies. If the logo appears on the other machine, I'll set up a thread on eBay so that I can get some help there. I tried setting a thread up there before, and it didn't work properly for some reason, but I'm happy to give it another try.

Thanks for your help, and if you have any more ideas please let me know.
