Who sent this email????

OK- I have an email and I want to find out who sent it. If I click on 'reply' normally it would show the sender's address, but it comes up blank or shows that I sent it too myself... What software will reveal the sender's true address? I looked thru Covert Ops, and I'm gonna try using Sam Spade. Any other links or programs or suggestions or tips will be appreciated!!!!

Did you try looking at the properties of the email?

 

If you look at the properties, you see the sender's address in the header. Of course, even this can be spoofed.

 

Or maybe your other personality is making itself known, via email?

Sounds like you might be using Outlook for your e-mail client -- which is entirely too successful in hiding the full headers on the incoming e-mail. It's much simpler with a decent e-mail program like Eudora.

Sam Spade is a good place to start -- but only if you can give it the full headers. The abbreviated headers displayed by most e-mail client programs don't say enough, and there's certainly not enough in the abbreviated headers to reveal a From: address forgery.

The full headers will show the machine name and IP address of every node the e-mail has passed through on its way to you. If the return address was forged, there will be a disconnect somewhere in that chain. Identifying it by hand takes more than a little practice.
