Why a solid cursor in XP Home?

I've been troubleshooting a friend's eMachine T1150 for awhile. Cleaned most of the troubles out, in fact had to wipe the drive and reload the OS. I would have preferred a true OS disc, but had to settle for the eMachine restore disc. Anyway, things were OK, but now we see on URL address bars, file name renaming functions, and elsewhere a solid blinking cursor instead of the usual underline. My friend prefers the underline, and I haven't found any mention anywhere of why this might have happened nor how to reset it. I'm thinking there may be a registry setting I can adjust, but if any of you have advice, that would be great.

    T1150 eMachine
    512MB RAM
    (I forget which CPU)
    Windows XP Home Edition

    TIA

Thanks...I'm new to these forums and wasn't sure which one would be best. I'll gladly post over on software.

Anyway, there's nothing in the mouse control panel associated with this...not as I could see!
