Sad thing about gaming that me, being a 37 year old gaming woman have come to realise, is that the active gaming world consists to a large extent of quite young kids. They want the social interaction about the gaming, and for many of them, we are talking 12-15 years old here, the top 10 lists are exciting.

I've been active in games forums, I've been a Tombraider fan for a long time. I've found gamers of all ages, up to 83, and it doesn't have to be this way. But when there isn't a good balance in age groups, then the non interesting threads tend to take over.

Now, being active in an online game, so many people can't believe 1st that I'm a girl, 2nd that I'm above 15... http://members.chello.se/solange/smileys/Rotfl.gif

I know what you mean Solange.....Im not what you would call an active gamer, however i enjoy the odd challenge or two. At 41, I have given it away now as i am sick of being flogged by my kids!
And i cant find the time...i guess its in the priorities.

@wavygravy... its horses for courses dude! I know MA likes em and who are we to argue with the boss.

Top 10 lists seem to crop up all the time be it on gaming, music, films, cars ( oooh I did that one  but made it different with a twist I think ), sports and farm animals, it happens when creative ideas run out, then once one member starts the flock follow and you have a whole host of the same..... not mentioning the forum but one big one has a whole part of the forum for this type of thing as it got so bad.

If the top 10 lists start getting repetitive and silly then its very easy for the admin/mod team to delete them.

Sad thing of gaming forums these days is that most are populated by teens and us older gamers tend to not really post on them let alone shudder the thought girlies play games!!!, but the plus points to your quote are yes you are a girl and over 15 and nicer that Cindy Crawford ;)

Aww you really do know how to make a gal feel good about herself! :)

Cindy might be a very sweet girl though, you never know!

What has always amazed me is how little the game publishers focus on us older gamers. We have more money, we are a quite substancial group in numbers as well, if you count all gamers between the age of say 18 and 99. But it feels like most ads and publicity target the ages around 15-16. Why is that? We are the ones with the money to buy the games, why don't they bother more about us?

And what has really bothered me for some time is how increadibly male oriented the game industry is! I have so many female friends who don't play games, because it is something "boys are supposed to do". They see all the focus on war games and sports games, which are games I would imagine a higher degree of men would prefer. My friends don't see all the fantastic games out there, puzzle based, adventure, rpg, they have sort of been fed with the idea that games is not for them.

Luckily now, we are seing an increase in female characters in games, and you can often chose between a male or female character when you play. But... One of the things the promotors of Tombraider Legend made the biggest fuss about was how they managed to make Lara's "attributes" bounce. Fgs! I doubt very much that guys think about that when they are facing an enemy and shooting as fast as they can... And women certainly don't. Why do they treat gamers as if they are all 14 boys who never saw a girl before?

No offence to you young ones, I know most of you do not think like this either! :)

Not seen a girl at all? Ever? At school? At least some of the class mates and teachers should be female! :D

    I think you thought I said a thing I didn't say! :D :p

Besides, who says most of them are? I'm sure statistics do, but...

this is my point exactly! With the targeted ads we have, no wonder most gamers are that age group!

    Dammit! :D

I think they target that age group with the ads because kids are more impulsive buyers. Us old farts have mostly played enough BAD games to take the ads with a grain of salt, look for reviews, and at least TRY to shop wisely. Been a long time since I've bought a game based on ads or box artwork.

As a guy, playing a female character has always been a pleasant change, as long as the game itself is good. Played all the Tomb Raider games, more because I like adventure/exploration/puzzle-solving more than mindless repetitive run & gun games. The two "No One Lives Forever" games were wickedly funny. My son, AND his wife, are avid players of City Of Heroes and City Of Villains, online RPG, but not swords and dragons. They got me hooked into the game so I could play with them, my first online game experience; I find I like it. Always hard to tell online, but there seems to be a fair mix of all ages there. Some obvious YOUNG kids, but a lot of more mature players as well. And either a good number of female players, or a lot of guys who've created female characters, which I find mildly disconcerting. LOL.

I think the reason that games devs aim in the case of Lara Crofts attributes bouncing is that the games market is primarily male driven and in that case sex sells ( rightly or wrongly ) as it does in other mediums.

Yeah, it does. Doesn't have to be nasty sex, but the boy-girl attraction is definitely there. Also true in Half-Life 2 series and quite a few other games. As games get more story-driven, I expect to see more male/female interaction between characters. I would assume the lady gamers would appreciate more representation in games as well, as more than just background props.

I tried to play NOLF2, but couldn't get used to the controles! I should give it another try now, its been a few years, and I have played other games with similar controles, it seems like such a fun game! :D

I play GuildWars, and online RPG game, and I assumed there was about 50/50 gents and ladies, but since everyone assumes I'm a lad  and asks if I'm really REALLY a girl, I've come to the conclusion quite many guys play female characters! Odd, as I doubt I would create a male character... with the possible exception of Ranger, they are so handsome... http://members.chello.se/solange/smileys/lol.gif

Yes, that is quite an obvious reason. But... I have been a long term member of the Eidos forum (eidos is the TR publisher) and we have about 50% female raiding members there. Maybe women are more likely to discuss their gaming (omg I'm just simply drenched in clichés tonight) but the vast number of female raiders on the forum suggests the developers are overlooking a huge target group.

G.T. If it wasn't for the fact that I truly suck at 1st person shooters, I would probably enjoy half-life very much. But I would want a female hero, with a male sidekick! http://members.chello.se/solange/smileys/Rotfl.gif

As you said though, I think things are moving in the right direction, even if women will have to be content with being sex figures for a little while longer till it is actually accepted that women also have the ability to play games! :)

I still get curious looks from co-workers when I tell them what I do on my off hours... Isn't it sad?

Sad, but you're not alone. Gamers in my age group are fairly rare; I've gotten the odd looks too.

See if you can find "Broken Sword, The Sleeping Dragon". Fairly old, should be cheap. Primarily an adventure game, although you CAN get killed. Both male and female leads; you play both, sometimes solo, sometimes together. Great character development and interaction, great dialogue, and a lot of fun.

Not sure how it works in Guild Wars, but in COH/COV, cute female characters have an easier time recruiting teamates and getting help of any kind. That may have something to do with the cross-dressing.

    I don't mind getting killed...

As long as I kill more often than I get killed! :D

I'll have a look though, sounds fun! :)

I suppose you are right about female characters getting help more easily. Hmm. I'm suddenly glad I'm in a good guild with mixed ages and genders, where that never is an issue! :)

Well, when I used to play games a lot more than I do now, I have played a female character on occasion - just for a change, until one day I was playing a female character, and I said "I'm actually a guy" - and I wasn't believed, LoL!

No matter, as long as one enjoys the game, i.m.o.

This is a perfect example of "forums discussion". Everyone's posts are extremly well thought out and witty without a hint of youthful superiority complexes. I haven't been here as long as some of you, but when I first arrived their was always really good discussions in the Gaming Forums. I was alittle embarassed at first to post (my pc knowledge was quite feeble), but after constant reading I learned enough for understanding of the lingo that was used.

I guess I just miss the really detailed discussions. When people list their Top Ten, (all the same games as everyone elses choices) it seems to add a certain commoness to the thread.

I havent played many online RPGs ( I think its robbery to have to pay monthly after youve already paid for the game) but Servers like FEAR and BF2 are loaded with males. For every 1000 males you have one female. I see the point of war/1stperson shooters are biased and aimed at men, but I always knew that women were some of the best gamers (my sis is awesome at FEAR multiplayer) and they need to take a crack at these mainly male dominated games.

I agree, this kind of discussion is always fun! :)

There are some online games that are without monthly fees, I wouldn't consider paying monthly myself, the game is usually steep enough! :)
