I just did the same thing *cough cough*. I did it a few months ago, but this time I was more thorough, making sure I got all dust out of the cpu.

Cpu temp dropped by 21 degrees C...

Serves me right I suppose, I've always claimed that cpu was supposed to run high! :D

Major Attitude, when was the last time you clean that thing? I would say about two years. Time to call the EPA!! I clean my case once or twice a year. It is one tech? thing I can do and not damage the puter.

LOL, I get a new pc every year and even then blow it out once or twice. That was a friend of a friends computer, came in with beeping error, replaced video card, reseated the ram, spent 17 hours removing spyware (yes Halo, same machine) and applying various speed tweaks. No point sending it back just running.

    Sweet and pretty.

I've been in charge of opening up pc cases at work for various reasons (not the primary reason to clean them). It's a manufacturing facility and even though the pcs are in offices -- wow = we're talking DIRT inside them. Nasty!

Unless you go out the back door, and clean….the dirt has to go somewhere….I’ve used a vacuum on the last three computers, I’ve had no problems….I tried the air in a can, and it just moved the dirt, still had to clean it up……….wobbles

A vacuum cleaner creates more ESD than a rave party on shagpile, but it can be used effectively if you know what your doing...as is obviously your case wobbles!

I think MA would have needed a front end loader for that one though......it came up a treat, nice job!

Even without the aid of Halo's dust bunnies!

Lost a graphics card to dust but by then it was four years old. However $400 graphics card + 4 years = $20 as predicted by the goose equation.
(Computer value + 4 years equals the square root of current value.)
    I'm still a bit slack
I find a vaccum or a blower won't do the space between cooling fins. Needs a long haired brush (esd heaven I suppose).

Thanks, I have a small brush that is used for cleaning the vents and tight spots in your car, available in any auto store, could not find it, found a small Jim Beam basting brush, similar to a small paint brush and used that to loosen it up, removed both sides of the case and blew it out outside. I never use a vacuum cleaner because its too bulky for delicate computers, instead a can of air and a tower held (or tilted) on it's side gets everything out.

I cleaned a computer out at work here and found a mouse nest. Right on top of the hard drive.

No wonder that hard drive failed :)

I forgot about using a brush, I use two….one is a auto parts cleaning brush, and the other an old artist paint brush, has a eight inch handle…..

I have a small computer cleaning kit for the vacuum, has two 3 inch long pipes that are ¼ inch in size, two brushes, one at the end of a two inch pipe, and one that is angled….works for me…….wobbles

Ha! Same here! What's worse; we're a machining shop! Our PCs build up with welding flux, dust, dirt, metal particles, you name it...

It ends up looking like someone dumped a spool of dark brown wool in our cases.

What's funny though, the PERSONAL PCs our users bring in are typically WORSE. I pulled enough hair out of one to make a shetland pony.

Damn, that was one filthy HP. Let me guess, never been opened in the three years he has had it? Also, that fan in the shroud does not belong there, due to it can cause more problems. The fan on the CPU is sufficiant in this design.

My eighteen months old PC went BANG yesterday and all due to dust on the Power source. A bit fell inside and caused a spark which blew out the cpu, motherboard, hard disk and PSU. Expensive lesson to learn.

I dont work at HP, I restored it as found. I am sure your right, it might be more functional on some of todays hotter machines, with very hot video cards just inches away :)

I am sure nothing has ever been done to it in 3 years.

Just when I got used to the thought of malware being my biggest worry. Now, it's dust bunnies. I thought computers were 'sposed to make life easy. It's like having a pet.

When I serviced PCs on the shop floor of a major automotive assembly plant, the interiors of the PCs were a combination of dust bunnies and dirt saturated with oil. But cleaning those filthy puppies was nothing compared to the office computers which seemed to fill with the detritus of humans; dead skin and hair and the creatures that feed on it. I always wore a filter mask, ear plugs and safety glasses when using compressed air to clean them. Some of my sickly workmates did not. :)

I remember a time when I started working in the computer room at my company that I've been with for these last 18 years (will be next month that is). We had 486 DX/2 computers that were built by the manager of the department back then.

We got the canned "air" and opened the cases. I swear they looked like the ones MA put up, but I think it was much worse considering that there is a lot of paper dust around which obviously would come in the PC and wreck havoc.

Needless to say nothing surprises me about when I open a case unless there isn't a lot of dust or when my co-worker told me that he did PC repair and had live roaches in the case.. Eww! I wouldn't want that at all when I open a PC. :p

Some get really bad. I usually use canned air and a vacuum at the same time. Works quite well. Clean my computers 2 to 4 times a yr. I believe in keeping the engine of my car clean too. Pays dividends, I believe.

I just got done building 1 usable machine out of 3 from livestock sales barns.

To get rid of the smell, you have to scrub everything with rubbing alcohol and spray everything down with contact cleaner. Needless to say I wont be biting my fingernails anytime soon.

I just noticed this one on Digg. It hasn't been cleaned in 10 years:

Looks like a duststorm ripped through that one. For some reason it's not filled with clumps like I expected, unless they wiped out everything else before taking the pictures.

I cant believe these PCs fans haven't fail yet, or that the motherboard hasn't failed yet!

As you face the case, on the left should be 2 screws to the back. Remove, slide panel off. You want to blow off any fans as well as vents you see, such as around the power supply. Be careful blowing around wires near the motherboard so you dont loosen any. If you do this a couple times a year, it should be plenty and easy to do because the dust will not be thick and stuck.

DANG!! Tim.... you almost have my pity on that one. I wish I had taken pix of my ex wife's machine before I overhauled it. Had to replace the HDD and the CDROM, She has a P2 machine that I keep limping along for her until hse gets a new one (no, we don't get along that well, my son will get the new one I am working on in his room here when it is built) It had a layer of dust and cat hair that litteraly came out in 1 piece per side/area, I've seen my other half shave down matted dogs and have less of a pelt to show for it. The HDD was so totally trashed that I coudn't even get any data off of it (and I have a couple tricks up my sleeve for things like that too...) I tell ya..... it was bad. The dirt was so bad that the 2 cooling fans in there were burt out (literally had scorch marks on them)

Her P2 was orginally a 5ooMHz machine now running around 800 with extra cooling I installed this time and a 20gig HDD 52x CDROM (no burners laying around at the moment)

I found out later from my son that their cat likes to lay on and around the computer for the heat...... that would be why i pulled enough hair out of there for 2 cats :)

EDIT: PS: I use a small shop vac with a 10' hose and a mico tool kit to clean them out. Got the tool kit at Big Lots, has a reducer and some small brush and slot tools that work well in the PC Guts. The other thing is, with that 10' hose, I can keep it far away from the machine, and I also use a modified wrist strap on the hose where the tools connect to keep ESD down.
