Why do cheaters cheat?

I was wondering why do cheaters feel the NEED and WANTING to cheat? I mean OK fine if your gambling 100,000$ and you found somehow a way to screw the house for it more power to you. But my point is why in games? games that there is no point of losing or winning, games that no one cares who you are or how good you score? Games that you forcibly need to pay-to-play and get no real life reward out of it. I feel that there is a blind spot that i dont see. Any one here old time cheater taht stopped? if so why DID you cheat? know any "friends" that do/did? why do they do/did it?

cause there sore loser's and get pissed off when they die or lose at sumtin so they go and look for a way to win...

 

Its not much of a win when you face 0 challenges. The point of winning anything is that you went against the odds and came out on the winning side.

 

I used to enjoy playing Tactical Ops, because there were only badly coded cheats for it, so all the cheaters were just 'more' challenging. I never used cheats myself, and I agree there is no reason to.. it just ruins the game for other people.

i suppose some people just dont want to invest the time to become good, but i'd get bored really quickly if there was no developed skill involved.

 

I like Counterstrike & got tired because of all the cheaters.. you had to run punkbuster ..blabla.. then the new version came out with built in security & valve/steam was going to ban all people caught with cheats (Yeah!) but guess what? the cheaters got around that.. I try not to let them ruin my fun.. especially when you can vote kick them! But just to see what is was about I did install the cheats for the 1st CS - but I played a server that was for CHEATS only.. so we were all on even ground again. Since then I do not cheat, I dont want / need to.
Most of the cheaters are kiddies with no skills, so instead of playing and learning - they cheat. It gives them the l33t feeling, even though we know they are fakes.

Frag 'em all and let the Admins sort 'em out.

 

Thats intresting, I've heard the excuse "i cheat to become better/good". Sounds like a deep paradox in which one contradicts the other. Thats as good as saying you'll learn how to cook by putting the food in the microwave.

 

why does anyone cheat? sports people, criminals, politicians, mechanics, used car salesmen, students on a test, george doing the iq test.....people think its a dog eat dog world i guess, they wanna give the other fella hell, they wanna quick path to success

 

Everything you mentioned there is SOMETHING to gain; be it reputation/money/ranking/status/grades. Cheating on a pub doesn't gain anything for the user.

 

of course they gain something. They gain the satisfaction of killing people when otherwise they probably could not. They gain the prestige of being on top of the ladder. These aren't monetary gains etc like you said...and I don't want to go into a commentary about whether the player gains or loses morally - any cheating gain being only a gain in the eyes of the corrupt cheater.....but sure they are gaining something from cheating in games.....no matter how small it may seem to those of us who don't cheat.

 

Cause they suck at that particular game.

 

I agree it's pathetic really, surely you buy the game because you want to enjoy it and it's supposed to be a challenge?
I do however admit using cheats on the original Doom for windows 3.1 because I sucked at games like that back then!

 

Have you ever watched one of the cheaters play. There are a few bugs in the original Halo that people can use to their advantage but seems to require a lot of button combinations. If they would spend as much time and care on playing the actual game without cheating they wouldn't need to cheat at all.

I guess I'll never understand.

 

Saying theyre at the "top of the ladder" for a trivial amount of time; how can anyone improve/get high morale from that? Boredem? Sorry trying to play devils advocate.

they get a high from being at the top when people like you and I, who would not cheat, would not get any satisfaction....and wouldn't even do it

the original question was why do cheaters cheat.

all the answers on this thread have been right.

they cheat imo because they:

a) are frustrated at being killed so easy
b) it makes them feel superior to others
c) they get a rush from being the master - from being better than others ( yes even if it is with cheat codes )
d) they think it is funny
e) they are rebels
f) they have no respect for others
g) not prepared to work on their game
h) they want some edge.....like any cheat in any field

and the benefit they get is to be top of the score sheet in game...little cheaters get big rushes from this is my contention


there are heaps of reasons why people cheat. there isn't just one answer. cheating is the dark side. and you know how powerful the dark side can be. just look at luke skywalker. he almost turned to the dark side....he was lured by the power he could get. just like cheaters. they are lured by the prospect of all this fragging power.......if they can just get that perfect undetectable cheat.....oh the power they would have

It's a psycological thing. Plus, they do it because they can.

 

most of the time its the ones that suck that do it. They get so frustrated losing that they just want to feel the feeling that the winners do. They want to know what its like to actually wiin once.


And im not just saying that because I hate cheaters, its true.

forgot the mention that i did this a couple times. i haven't for a while because i thought about why I was doing it, and figured "whats the point? if i'm going to be best, but still have no skill and no fun while doing it." the feeling was great for the first couple kills, and then it got boring, the fun was takin away. and I thought what a shame to be banned from great servers for not having fun.

 

I couldn't care less if someone is cheating at anything. I you have to cheat to win then you are still a loser.

 

Cheaters cheat because in the real world they can't succeed.

So, in a virtual world - they can feel powerful. They can feel like they are in control. I suspect that some people even imagine they are actually "killing" specific people.

People they blame for them not succeeding. People they feel inferior to.

It's pretty sad really, you should feel sorry for them.

well i use to cheat and use to do it over boardom (sad i know) anyway i dont know so there was no point in it and since i dont cheat now ive got beter at games i play.. cheating gets you no where but ppl do it for many reasons.. over boardom, there sick of being called nubs, they want a thrill, and all that.. when i use to cheat i got my m8 to do it to.. we went on a hacking spree fun but lame

Also, people cheat cause they can. From the start of the mankind, people have been cheating, it is a part of being human. Ever seen in a movie or cartoon where a caveman sees a female human, but he cant do anything intelligent or fair to get her so he simply uses his huge wooden bat and knock her out then carries her to the cave by her hair....may be the first cheater if you don't count Adam eating the apple even when God told him not to!

 

I know, old thread, but I couldn't pass on the opportunity of putting my two-cents.

I will admit to being a cheater. BUT, I refuse to do so until I have beaten the game.

For example, Final Fantasy Tactics. Beat it 3 or 4 times just because it was so fun. Then I found out about changing the sprites in the game, after not playing for 2 years. It renewed my interest in playing the game, especially after I created Sepheroth and Trunks from DBZ (including Kamehameha Wave).

Now for online games, I won't cheat. I only play in closed servers, usually in Hardcore. So there is no chance to cheat.

I see everyone else's point, but some of the modders of your favorite games started learning by coding cheats. So not all of us are bad.

That's my 2 cents.
