Why do I need to keep logging in?

I've noticed that I constantly need to login into sites that I never had to before...like MG and Yahoo. These are sites I use constantly and everytime I open it up (from Favorites or a new window) I need to re-login. The only thing I can think of is that I installed AdAware and SpyBot. Do I need to configure them so that my sites can recognize me again?

    Thanks,
    Stephanie

if you've dumped your cookies in the past and when returning to the site you login without checking the box that says "REMEMBER ME" , then you will have to login each visit.

Most spyware programs identify and, at your discretion, remove cookies. Your login at most websites is controlled by cookies, which may or may not expire when your browser session ends. If you delete the cookies, then...

OOOH! Yes, I do remember seeing that my cookies are being dumped each time I close a window. Thank you so much!

That is, don't log out. If you're using a program that cleans up your cookies make sure you keep the ones that have "majorgeeks" in the name.

i don't know where to find them or how to save them.
    i have:-
    windows XP home +office 2000
    I.E. 6.0
    AntiVir P.E
    Zone Alarm
    SpyBot S&D 1.3
    spywareblaster
    CleanUp 3.1.2
    C.Cleaner
google has a message box that says my cookies are disabled and gives instructions on how to enable them. unfortunately the instructions are for IE 5 and bear no resemblance to IE 6.
if enabling the login cookies puts my puter at risk from the nasties then i will carry on relogging in each time. if there is a way of choosing which cookies i keep and which i should disable then i need easy to follow, step by step instuctions. much aloha laurie

    Laurie -

The cookies are in your Temporary Internet Files folder (something like this...

"C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files)" and also in (I believe) "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Cookies". What gets deleted in the TIF folder will get automatically deleted in the Cookies folder. If you create a shortcut to the TIF folder on your desktop with the following string (with quotes) in the target box you can manage your own cookies if you'd like (it's what I do)

%windir%\Explorer.exe /n,/e,"C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files" (got this tip from a member here, WiseWiz, though I haven't seen him lately here)

    Other settings...

    1. IE 6.0 (I'm using Win 2000 here) if you go to Tools/Internet Options/Privacy Tab/ and click in the Advanced button you can enable "Override Automatic cookie handling" - Accept First Party cookies, Block third Party cookies and Enable "Always Allow Session Cookies". This will help.

In the Privacy Tab there is an "Edit [Web Sites]" button were you can place specific sites in there to always block or alway accept (like MajorGeeks and sites you frequently visit on a regular basis requiring cookies to logging purposes.

    2. In Spybot you need to go into Advanced Mode, Click on Settings and go to "Ignore Cookies". Select the ones you want to keep.

    3. In C. Cleaner (not installed anymore) - there is a place for keeping specific cookies but removing the rest.

Not sure about the rest, but these are a good start. For me since IE is what I'm using at work, those steps I've mentioned keeps me clean well enough.

    Hope this helps

Guess I/m going against the trend. Different strokes for different folks, etc. I prefer to wipe all cookies (and who knows what) every day and log in to each site each time I log on. Don't access many sites that need a password so it doesn't worry me. Too lazy to set up the various programs to accept various cookies, I guess. Bazza

well that will teach me to leave well enough alone! did everything you suggested in the second part of your post under 'other setting's and it still didn't keep the loggin for yahoo, majorgeeks or the preferences for google. so i went back and put then back to default and then when i came bake here MG wouldn't let me on. it accepted my loggin but when it proceeded to the page it went back to not logged in. i have now gone back to tools/internet options etc. and allowed what you said. :(
