Why Do Icons Change?

I find that once in a while some of the icons on my desktop will change to a green check mark in the lower center. After a while, it changes to the regular image. At times it stays in this state. Never noticed this before.

Is this something new in Win 10?

    Why does it do that?

just a guess, after looking at the link above, but windows is probably checking that the shortcuts and other desktop icons are valid and/or lead to a valid destination. just another way microsoft thinks they are being helpful, but ends up confusing people since they never explain "new features".
