Why does it ask for the Office 2000 CD-ROM?

We set up PC's for our various offices. Recently we've been reconfiguring some things that require us to create new user profiles.

Sometimes what seems like totally random applications, when luanched under this new user profile, will bring up a box that asks for the Office 2000 CD-ROM, and appears to be attempting to locate a specific file. I rarely have an Office 2000 disc with me, so I need to click a series of Cancels before the program will run. This ususally happens with non-Office 2000 programs.

What do these programs (mostly in-house developed software) have to do with Office?

Is there a way to make this not happen anymore?

I've seen this happen for a while, it even happens on my home PC, after I upgraded from 2000 to 2003, IE started asking for the Office CD-ROM. I thought maybe it was an Authentication type thing, but my CD's are legit.

I need to diable this somehow, because I cannot just send an Office CD to every location that tells me their PC is now asking for it. We have one disc with either a volume or business license, but I'm worried If I send a disc out each time, it's going to start getting passed around to non-employees.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks, Steve

    evilevets,

Maybe if you disable Office in startup. Also, found this bit of info below that might give you some ideas / options.

You might see if there is anyone in the company with a CD of the exact same version of Office 2000. There are a lot out there (Professional, Premium, Small Business, SR1 versions, full versions, upgrade versions)

For future use, I always copy the content of the Office CD to a directory on the hard drive and install from that directory. Then when Office needs files, it will just pull it from the drive.

Thats right, I forgot, Office puts itself in the startup menu by default. I'm sure I wouldv'e removed it, but I'll need to check.

I was also wondering if there was some way to copy any and all files that Office would possibly need to the local drive? How would I know? I wonder if there is one specific file that it calls upon for certain applications?

Office 2000 replaces some key Windows common .dll files. Yes it's very annoying, because you can run something very innocuous (like aboutBuster 3.0) and the MS Office installer will run. It will do this for each user who logs onto the machine, too, although once it does so successfully, you should never see it again for that user.

On the plus side, the installation routine is just looking for the data1.cab file, which I think is included as part of the administrative download for Office 2000 SR-1 (the 150 MB one).
