I'm using a Mentor 4port modem-router (MR4C Conexant), I am also using Zone Alarm. I know there is a feature in Zone Alarm which puts the connection to sleep if it isn't being used except it isn't enabled!! When I go to use IE or any app that needs a connection I get a 'work offline/try again' pop-up, if I elect to try again it reconnects. Usually. It has fallen over entirely a couple of times and by going into the router settings and rebooting a couple of times and doing diagnostic tests it has sorted itself out. (Even managing to boot the other PC in the LAN as a bonus feature!) It never used to do this which makes me think that software/hardware failure/corruption is the underlying cause here.

My specs are Win XP Pro on both macines. My newer Athlon XP2800+ system seems to work fine where this is concerned so I won't go into its specs. The problem system is a Duron 800, 512mb ram, Gigabyte K7 Triton MB, Altima 1002 Gigabit Ethernet er not sure what else to say!

As the newer system works I'm guessing it isn't the router. Anyone have any idea what this might be?

Look like power management for your ethernet card. check your device manager, open properties on your ethernet card, go to power management tab. then uncheck "allow computer to turn off this device to save power" if its already checked.

Maybe your router need update firmware. I dunno website address for your mentor router that you can download firmware, but you should have address somewhere maybe on cd that came with your router or in manuel. Not sure if firmware will helps, but at least try get that over with then figure out what next if this problem contiunes.

Already as up to date as I can be. If it was the firmware it'd effect both machines anyway I would have thought. Gotta be something else.
