Why Does My Screen Becomes Brighter (computer Shuts Down)?

My computer shuts down by itself in certain circumstances, in particular after one minute or so when I type in boxes, as I'm doing here (guaranteed shut down if I don't interrupt the action regularly), but also when I use word or excel, or sometimes, but not always, when I stay idle. I started a thread on this issue in the "windows" subforum without much success. But I noticed something that makes me thing it could be a hardware issue.

Immediately before the shut down, my screen becomes brighter. Also, I sometimes noticed that the battery icon indicated it was loading (don't have the time/reflex to notice every time). Also, the battery doesn't work. The computer works only on sector. I suspect that in these particular circumstances, the computer tries to switch to the battery for some reason, and since it doesn't works, it shuts down. But it's a wild ass guess.

What could cause the screen to become brighter? Maybe knowing that and what my computer is doing or trying to do when it shuts down would help me fix the issue.

It's not an overheating issue. I already checked that.

    Thanks in advance.

Let's clear up a few things first.

When you say, "guaranteed shut down if I don't interrupt the action regularly", what do you mean by "interrupt" and how do you do that? And if you do "interrupt the action regularly", will the computer keep running indefinitely?

I am trying to get a picture of when this happens. You say it happens "under certain circumstances" but then say it is "when typing", "when idle", when "using Word or Excel". I am not seeing "certain circumstances". I am seeing no pattern at all. It just seems to happen at random, no matter what you are doing.

And what do you mean when you say the computer only works on "sector"? Do you mean it only works when running off the charger/power supply? Is that with the battery still installed? What if you take the battery out and try to run just on the charger?

Have you tried connecting an external monitor to see if it behaves the same way?

How did you check the temperatures and what were they?

The screen getting brighter then the computer shutting down suggests to me one of three things. Either (1) the display panel is failing, drawing too much current and causing the computer to shutdown [hopefully] to protect itself from that excess current. (2) The battery has developed a short and is trying to draw too much current. Or (3), the charger/power supply is failing. And since you said the battery does not work and the computer "for some reason" tries to switch from battery to charger then crashes, I am leaning towards a bad battery.

I would start by removing the battery and running the computer on charger only to see what happens.

I meant that if I regularly stop writing and do something else, for instance opening another tab and clicking on something, It doesn't shut down. If I keep writing, it always shut down in short order.

It's almost always when typing. In a box like here, in excel, in a mail....Very occasionally it happens also when I'm idle. In this case the shut down is preceded by an alert sound one second before.

Yes, running only from the power supply. And the battery is still installed. I didn't try to take out the battery because it's fixed, you can't just remove it like that.

    No, I didn't but it's a laptop, so I don't think that I can do that, can I?

With Coretemp. The temperature was about 50°C just before the shutdowns, , which is normal for my computer.

More exactly, normally the battery icon indicates that it's full or nearly full. But what I sometimes noticed before the shutdown is that it appeared as if the battery was empty and charging instead.

OK, I'll try to see if I can remove the battery.

Wow. This is really a odd problem. I confess - I'm guessing.

    50°C is fine.

I have never seen a laptop that didn't support an external monitor. One of their most common uses, after all, is for use in meetings where a PowerPoint presentation, for example, is sent to an external monitor or projector so everyone can see. So no doubt, there is a video output port on it. There is no industry standard but typically there is a F-key combination to go from laptop monitor to external monitor to both. On my Toshiba, for example, it is Fn + F5 to cycle through the options.

So when it "shuts down", is it crashing? Or is it acting like it is going to sleep? If going to sleep, I wonder if, for some reason, it is not seeing your keyboard activity. I wonder what would happen if you tried a different USB keyboard.

My wife's HP will come out of sleep with a very dark screen which I have to go into display settings to correct. I have no idea as to why this happens. ( Fortunately, it doesn't shut down. )

Different brightness settings for on battery versus plugged in. I have a lower brightness setting for on battery than I do for plugged in. If I'm on battery and then put the plug in, the screen will turn brighter.

Your laptop is having an issue knowing if it is using the battery or using electric.

Ummm, I think we've lost track of the problem. The OP said while using the computer, the computer just shuts down. But before shutting down, the screen turns brighter. But those symptoms only happen when continually typing in a text box. If the OP regularly changes to a different task, like clicking on a link in a webpage, the computer will keep working fine.

I could be wrong but to me, that does not sound like the computer is confused as to whether it is plugged into the power supply or the battery. Something else is going on. I am curious if the the brightness changes on an exterior monitor too.
