why does the DS only have WEP?

Why would Nintendo do something so stupid, and for those without wireless routers have to buy a wireless usb adapter which only supports 802.11b????

What is this, are we back in 2001

 

802.11g routers are backwards compatible with 802.11b.

However, why Nintendo did it, who knows. This is the same company who is leaving out HDTV support in their upcoming console. Ive not heard otherwise since that info got out.

yeah, but wont the 'b' support of the DS cause other devices on the network to run at 'b' speeds?

 

What I am saying is why cant the DS have WPA also and 'g' mode capability alond with wep and 'b' mode.

Maybe it had to do with how the packaging internally was set up ? maybe it required more in it then it could handle... stupid comment wasnt directed at anyone thats why i put the " ", i meant it as you shouldn't be calling ideas stupid, since they all serve a purpose.

 

Well you cant really complain cuz the PSP is only 802.11b too. No, having the DS use "b" will not make the other wireless devices run at "b" too because most wireless routers let you select "mixed" so it can use "b" & "g" at the same time. At least my $50 linksys WRT54G has that option, so most other routers should too.

 

however some ideas serve better purposes than others It's just that a new device like the DS shouldn't be saddled with wep only, especially considering the power it has.

Doesn't the mixed mode mean that all devices run at b speeds so they are compatible with each other? That means everything is running slow. At least thats the impression I get from here http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/article.php/3559976

 

having a DS and a PSP is like having a MAC and a PC , they may run similarly and have similar power capabilities but without proper mfg support theyll never talk to each other.

Well my idea was, as i understood your post is "why would someone want a <car with alot more features here> when they can use a <lower end car here>" in terms of the same price. My point was that obviously you would want to hog a bigger audience.
