I turned on my pc today and to my surprise my power supply made a loud buzzing sound for about 20 seconds than went silent like it's supposed to. I assumed my pc probably had some dust inside so I went to my local department store and purchased a can of compressed air. I cleaned out my entire pc (took me a couple of hours), and than plugged my pc back in.

This time it did the same thing... I turned it on and my power supply made a loud buzzing hum for about 20 seconds and than went back to normal. For some reason it starts buzzing as soon as I turn on my pc, and than goes silent (like normal) when the boot shows the windows xp password login screen.

I turned off my pc again... waited for a bit, and than pressed the power button. It did it once again and went away when the windows xp password login screen shows up!

Hmm this time I decided to restart the pc, not turn it off and power it up. So I restarted and it didn't do it. Hmm so this time I turned my pc off and waited a bit...

I pressed the power button quite firmly and the pc booted with no problem or buzzing sound. Now I've come to let you all know about this and want feedback as to what may be happening.

The airflow comming out of the psu is perfectly fine. The back of my pc is set half a foot from the wall. This psu is new and I bought it about 6 months ago. & I use a compressed can of air on my pc every month and a half or two.

Maybe it's because I always kind of tap the power button instead of pressing it firmly as I did the last time???

Anyways I'm off to bed. Hope to hear from you all.

Well looked at the PSU which you have 'Deer 450w'.

If I am looking at the correct model etc, my first comment would be to point out that this psu costs approx $26CAD new. That in itself tells me all that I need to know about this psu.

Consequently, I would put this Deer psu in the same category as QTec psus. I will refrain from making any kind of comment apart from the fact that I do not buy QTec which is available in the U.K and I would personally club to death anyone approaching any of my pcs with a view to installing such a psu.

The psu is one of the most important components of your pc treat it with respect or suffer the consequences.

    Good Luck

When I first bought this PC the psu was Qtec, without me knowing of course. After 30 minutes in idle situation the whole machine absolutelly stuck. When I opened the case I knew what I was going to face. A label "claiming" that the psu could provide up to 500W. My ass. With 50$ additionally I echanged it with a Tagan 450W and everything works perfect.
Truth is that since your psu costs 26$ !!!!!! you shouldn't complain as long as you make it through the boot

I am not comlaining about my psu nor am I asking for opinions on brand names.

    What could be the consequences?

All I've been asking is what this noise could have been. Anyways I've turned on my pc 3 times now without problems. Remember folks I'm not on a P4 I'm still using a P3 so my system does not comsume much energy. Please just give me facts or replies as to what it could have been and maybe what I could do now in case there is something I should still check. Like I said it hasn't done it anymore but oh well I still want any useful information.

Ugh. As pointed out, they are telling you that your power supply is a cheap piece of garbage and is probably either dying or the sound is the downside of a cheap ps, something one should not skimp on. That was your answer, its not worth working on, replace it just in case.

You see, your question WAS answered, you just didnt like the answer. The information was useful, you just opted to ignore the obvious and show attitude to people trying to help you. If you have to ask such a basic computer question like power supply noise, you MIGHT learn something by listening to people expalining to you the importance of a quality, high wattage power supply. Were glad to help, just try listening.
