Why is Spybot S&D not working..

Hi there, I have been a user of SB S&D for a long time now and am noticing that I can not update Spybot even from a fresh reinstall of it. I first noticed this last night when on the update screen I couldnt select a server from the pull down list. When attempting to auto update it hangs for a bit then says there are no updates to install, but on the about screen it says no detection updates installed. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it, restarted comp etc a few times now, have run many other spyware/adware scanners and still cannot get it to work properly now, please help if you have the time, thank you.

ps. i have included a summary of my system, please advise what you would like me to do next.

 

What version of SB S&D are you using?

Also your OS is way out of date and represents a serious security risk, please update your OS using the Windows Update Service.

 

Thank you, yes, I will update my OS when I can get around to my friends place to user their broadband . As I have always done, I am using SB S&D 1.3...

 

I could be wrong but I think their update servers are not working... I'm getting the exact same thing on my end right now. Or, we have the exact same problem.

 

Try the latest version SpyBot-Search & Destroy 1.4 RC2b available right here at MG.

 

I tried it on mine and at first the download servers didn't come up. Then I click on it again and they came up.

 

Can anyone else confirm this problem with the update servers?

Yup, the servers are coming up on mine. I am running 1.4RC2b.

 

I'm 1.3 .... and I just cannot contact the update servers right now. I think this problem is on their end.

 

You are the man, thats all it was, you need to update to 1.4, thanks for your time, closed issue in about 10 minutes thanks. Oh btw, does this version need the DSO Exploit patch applied ?

 

I don't think so, as the sticky in the Spyware Forum no longer asks you to download and install the DSO exploit fix.

 

Updating to the 1.4 release candidate 2 does solve the update problem. I'm guessing Spybot intends to roll out the final version of 1.4 VERY soon and cutoff support for 1.3?

 

updated yesterday on one computer and today on another computer with no updates available. first thing i do is click on undates. havent had any problems getting em.

 

Well, whatever the problem is, it seems to have gone away. I have a machine at work here that is running v. 1.3 and there does not seem to be any update issue with it at all right now. Strange stuff.

 

I go to the net-integration forum quite a bit. Spybot 1.3, 1.3.1, 1.3.1 tx, 1.4 beta had/has an issue with attempting to access the remote server for updates. There is a file that spybot checks for on the remote server, that gives a list of server updates and files.

Spybot goes and downloads a file named: http://security.kolla.de/updates/spybotsd.ini
Within this file is a list of servers and what files are availabe. This file was there but the permissions were all messed up(from what I gathered). This is what caused the error.

Those who were using the 1.4RC2b version never noticed this problem, cause their update server was via: http://www.safer-networking.org/updates/spybotsd.ini


Yes, 1.4RC2b does work fine. Are they going to do a roll out soon?

Anyway, I noticed this 2 days ago.


Perhaps next time I'll post as soon as I hear something. Everything should be fine now.

 

One rant I do want to say about the net-integration forum. They gave me a "cease and desist" private post for helping people on their forum. Seems that if one wants to become a "helper" they have to go through training. No matter if said applicant has already been using computers for 23 years. Oh well. I no longer post there.
