Why Is Windows Update Such A Poor Service

Why is it that Microsoft are on version 11 of Windows and Windows has been around for 36 years yet Windows Update is such a pathetic function? Whenever I update other software on my computers, except Office 365 (Microsoft again) the updates are relatively quick and happen smoothly with the software telling me what’s happening.

When Windows updates you are not really given an information. There is no progress bar. It simply states “Status: Installing x%”. There was an update available today and it’s been running for over an hour and is still at 20%, which is where it started at. How can it even start at 20%?

I know my moan isn’t going to change anything but it is annoying that Microsoft have almost a monopoly on computer operating systems but are simply not at all customer oriented.

I hear you. My system slowed to a crawl, which I knew meant an update was waiting. Browser either stops working or it is incredibly slow!! And yes, it took an hour. A good 10 to 15 minutes staring at a screen saying 100% complete.

One reason I switched to android devices and a chromebook. Updates in Android (phones and tablets) and ChromeOS are lot less hassles than Windows ever was and I suspect will remain.
99% of my time is spent surfing so I don't requires Windows to do that.

Yes, I've also noticed that your PC becomes sluggish when there's an update pending. Glad to hear it's not just me this happens to and that I'm not the only one it frustrates.

My phone is an iPhone so as far as devices go I use iOS.

I'm not even sure what a chromebook is but I might look into it.

Everything at work is Windows based and we use Office and as I have to bring work home my choices may be limited.

You could try a Linux distribution such as Fedora Linux as secondary operating system. The linked Fedora Linux images are live images and can be tried out without even installing it.

Have you ever looked into macOS? A Mac may be another alternative after applications such as Microsoft Office are available for macOS.

Linux and macOS updates are a breeze plus both have really nice touchpad gestures (on laptops)

I always believed that the slowness is due to the updates having to find the files which require updating rather than updating everything contained in the update.

My own experience, Win 7/10 updates have worked perfectly, except for two mishaps both Win 7):

    1. One update won't update properly, and Win tried updating over multiple cycles over months until finally succeeding. Luckily, did not affect my usage / workflow.

    2. One update totally bricked my Lenovo laptop - rebooted to completely blank screen - so couldn't even reboot to rescue disk. Had to buy a new laptop!

Win 10, so far so good. I've a feeling simple, standalone Home user setup's are just simpler.
