Why no hash codes?

    Hi,

New to the forum but a big fan of MG for a while (was sad to see the daily warning section go -- forgot what it was called -- but now look to secunia). I was wondering why MG doesn't post hash codes/MD5s for the software here to help make sure that what is downloaded is correct. Am I missing something?

    Thanks!

Really? This is reclassified as non-computer discussion? Wow - I feel like I've been sent to the Isle on CL!

It's not like a search on "MD5" brought up anything besides "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms." I also didn't see anything in the FAQ. Maybe I'm blind/slow -- can someone point me to the answer?

    Hi

Its more a website question on the reason of not adding MD5 code to the download links page over somethings broken on your PC, but that said I have no answer for you on why the main downloads page links dont have the code, but will ping one of the owners who deal in this stuff to get them to address your question.

MD5 does cost a bit for the GUI but the CLI version is still free. Just to do this site right, I've never had a bad DL from here.

Yes, we test everything before we post it. So, we don't feel the need to defend our "new" version by numbers, we need to test the file anyhow. Majorgeeks has done this before malware to test for quality, latest version, bugs and more. Hope that helps.

Hi and thanks for the responses.

I suppose that what I'm worried about is if the download links provided are hijacked (either locally on my machine or at the level of your site). I was under the impression (perhaps mis-impression?) that an MD5 (or CRC) hash would give a pretty good indication that I had downloaded the authentic file (checking the hash posted on the site with the results of, say, FileAlyzer on the file downloaded to my machine). Of course, if there was a hijack of an MG link, they could probably also change the hash string on the site to match whatever malware they might link to.

@ augiedoggie - I agree, the only broken files I've ever gotten from MG are because my connection fizzled mid-download (easily fixed), though I occasionally see files here whose versions aren't even out on the authors' sites (I usually wait a day or two for those to match to be sure everything is OK).

I suppose posting hash codes was more of something for the suggestion box (assuming that I haven't got the wrong impression about what I was doing in the first place), and, even at that, probably not the highest of priorities. Thanks for all the great work!

Suggestions are always good, even if they have been talked about in the past, revisiting them at times may actually bring new ideas to light and be instrumental in actioning said suggestion.

So cheers for the suggestion and being a part of Majorgeeks, without members who like you ask questions, forums become quiet places.
