Why The Different "save" Message?

Apparently when I ran MB or Avira, DesktopOK got uninstalled. For some reason, the setup *.exe was gone, so I went to download it again (I tried both the author's site & MG). But instead of the bar at the bottom of the screen asking me if I wanted to Open, Save or Save As the file, I got a window, purporting to be IE talking, asking me the same. I never saw that before. What gives?

Y'all will recall I'm STILL (for the moment) running Win7. Could this be due to an update, or should I be suspicious?

It's not changed for ALL file download attempts, just SOME. Hmmm....

    Hi Skull

Can you post a screenshot of the window that pops up that you have never seen before?

Its possible that the message you are getting is from an update to IE and more so its SmartScreen filter but a screenshot as I mention early should help ID. The download of that app at Majorgeeks is a zip file so it could be a message to alert you to you need to unzip before running the exe, sadly a lot of messages windows gives at times dont actually mean what you think they should. I'm just guessing without more info.

Before, whenever I went to download something, I'd see what you see in the first picture ("old save window 1.jpg"), the white bar at the bottom of the screen.

If you didn't act immediately, the bar would turn orange, like you see in the second picture ("old save window 2.jpg").

But now, when I went to download DesktopOK again, I got what you see in the third picture ("DesktopOK save window.jpg").

And get this: I didn't crop the picture of the DesktopOK save window - when I hit Alt+PrtScn, only the save window itself got captured - not the whole screen!

Right now I can't find another program that gives rise to this new kind of save window, but I THINK I did see at least one other one last night when I was trying to investigate what was going on.

Incidentally, about a week ago Win7 actually made me do a REBOOT so it could do an update (something I had never seen before), and the update took an exceptionally long time, and I think (although I'm not sure about this part) that after the reboot, the update MAY have continued.

And that's all the more odd because I don't think I had not bothered to reboot for more than 2 or 3 days before this happened, and the update process said it was doing only a single update.

And that's all I know. unless you've got any specific questions.

    Was Internet Explorer perhaps updated?

Alt + Prt Scrn should only capture the active window, not the whole screen.

I myself didn't update it, but it's set to install new versions automatically. It had already been Version 11, I don't know anymore than that, but it is now version 11.0.9600.18204, update v11.0.28.

My OS is Win7 Pro. I thought that it HAD been Service Pack 1, Edition 11.0.9600.18124, Update Version: 11.0.26, don't ask me where I got that information but I made a note of it, but I now see that, after the aforementioned update, it's Version6.1, Build 7601: Service Pack 1.

    Roger that.

Do YOU see this window when you start to download DesktopOK?

And has anybody ELSE seen this window, for ANY software download?

Where are you downloading DesktopOK from?
    I'll give it a try.

  9. Skullduggery's Dupe

    From DesktopOK 4.24.

I notice that all the files I started to download that yielded the old "Save" bar were .exe's, and this one download that yields this new "Save" window is a .zip.. I wonder if that could be related in any way?

Doesn't make any difference whether the file is .exe or .zip.
And I get the bar... this is very strange.

I take it you've never seen this new "Save" window before?

No. And btw, I used Internet Explorer 9.
I suggest you restore the Advanced Settings and restart IE.

I'm sorry to say that that did NOT change the situation.

Has ANYONE ELSE seen this mystery "Save" window before?

I know I've seen both in Vista and IE9. Not sure of in 8.1. But in either case I use a download manager that usually kicks in first. It's really the same options as the bar across the bottom and either allows you to view download progress. Click save as and you can choose location.

Does this also happen when not using the download manager?

I can actually get 3 pop-up depending on who know's. A small in the middle of the screen probably like yours then it get's overlayed with FDM and sometimes the bar across the bottom at the same time. If it's small or maybe a pdf I can close FDM and use the open choice from the bar at the bottom. Sometimes FDM doesn't kick in or has a problem and the 'Windows' function is already there.

As I just said in my other thread, "Recommend Good Free Video Editor?", I'm not using an FDM.
So then do you think it's safe for me to download DesktopOK?

    Yes it's safe.

Okee doke, downloaded, scanned without incident and extracted (requires no Windows install), works fine, I'm back in business with it, thanks Eldon and Imandy.

    Hi

I just opened up IE11 and did a quick test and found that I get the Save Window popup at the bottom if the file downloading is an .exe and get Save Window 3 if the file is a .zip or similar, the cause perhaps is that you get the Run|Save|Cancel on .exe as you can directly run the file, the 3rd Open|Save|Save As| is on a zip as you cannot directly execute it properly before its uncompressed.

I think DavidGP's post explains it.
    I still use IE9.

Right, I had observed that in post #9 of this thread, but why Microsoft deems this distinction worthy of two different Save windows is anybody's guess...

Well, at least the different Save window didn't actually cost me any money...
