Ok, I am a dedicated and knowledgeable baseball fanatic, and this is way too "pink hat", but I really do think female fans have so much of an edge over the poor guys. I LOVE the game, I love the stats, I love the sound and sight of my game- but there is no purer enjoyment than watching a guy with a catcher's build run those bases.... Ahhhh, blissssss. Go ahead guys and flame me on this one, I have it coming :-o, but I count myself blessed, lol. My particular fave, of course!!! is Jason Varitek!!! and I DO agree, Dougie Mirabelli was an exception, the lil pudgemo, but I do miss him and how he could catch Wakie's knuckleballs..... who could ever forget that brilliant moment when he had been traded and early into the season within just a few hours Boston bought him back, the Mass State Police met him at the airport and he changed in the prowl car on the way to the Fenway, arriving just in time to take his place behind the plate- to me that is the quintessential definition of the endemic place the Red Sox have in the history and culture of my beloved home town!

Okay. Boston are the weakest team in the entire league at the minute. They can't pitch, catch or bat for toffee. The best team in the world are the Yankees. They are ready to take the World Series by storm. Anyone who doesn't agree is a nincompoop.
Right, that's the pretence at knowing what I'm talking about dispensed with.
Everything I know about baseball (terminology and teams) could be written on the back of a postage stamp.
Anyone care to explain the rules and gameplay?

Joey, Joey Joey.....Boston is in first place, we just swept the Yankees in three, we have one of the best bullpens in the league, and two of the best hitters, Pedroia and Youklis.
As far as rules, it's basic, get the hits, take the bases, try not to get three outs in an inning- the rest, just pick up as ya go, some of it is just learn by doing. the perks are this- good camaraderie, an excellent game for geeks, because it is packed with statistics, minutiae and trivia, and hot dogs, and BEER. But basically Bill is right- it IS rounders for girls. But the guys look really, really nice in their uniforms....... really nice. Really. OK, I'm off to get a life, or take a nap- not sure which.....:wave

The rest of us might be more inclined to enjoy the Catchers running the bases if they could. All those squatting muscles make them very slow.

Yeah, isn't it great? Gives me more time to enjoy the sight. Varitek used to be pretty good at stealing bases though, but I don't see a lot of that this year. We are lucky enough to have the Captain for a few more years, and then I hope he signs on for coaching, because he brings our pitchers along better than anyone I've ever seen.

Oh, hrlow, i hang my head in shame!:-o But I defend myself! I'm not objectifying you (the great and glorious male species), per se... I am objectifying baseball catchers, with great glee:-D However, if it will make things up between us, with all the respect I have for you, I will be very happy to make an exception and objectify you. It would be my pleasure!:wave

Isn't it time for us to have another great barbecue/picnic and Guinness discussion? I feel it coming on, the larder is really, really boring and empty. I am very into objectifying some BBQ ribs. By the way, how do you guys feel about Gordon Ramsay? Do you get his great show on cable? I get it on BBC America and I am so, so hooked. He does his Shepherd's Pie with ground lamb and some red wine, which I never considered, but it sounds lovely- however I think I would delete the touches like thyme and rosemary, that just doesn't fit into my conception of a good home meal of Pie. And where do you all stand on corn in it? The old standby I always learned was creamed corn, not plain canned (my mum always used canned, but the creamed is delightful), ground beef, salt, pepper (I add garlic, of COURSE) onions, top layer of good mash, not instant except when very bucks-down, sprinkle in some cheese (I like shred cheddar, not Parm) copious dabs of real butter and brown under the broiler. I also like the thought of the red wine reduction and tomato puree- sounds much more hearty and tasty. Sound off Geeks- whaddya think? I also love the fact that Victoria Beckham let him move his sheep from his back garden to their estate- WOW is that the London version of a little house in the suburbs? I'm totally up with that. I love the fact that Posh NEVER smiles, and when asked why, she was sheepish (pun intended) and said her face just never goes that way- she won my heart with that. I had thought she was just a snob, but that endeared her to me. She's kind of a Twiggie for the millenium. (oh god now you know how old I am!) (not THAT old, my SISTERS, OLDER were into twiggie.)rolleyes

Gave you a thanks for making me feel young- it's been a LONG day. Also, doing some calculations, the twiggie thing leads me to believe you were a very very young parent. lol, but said with the best wishes!
incidentally, joking aside, you have been a great help to me on these forums, so joshing with you is a pleasure. Thanks!

You are just a babe in the woods! Way you talked, I thought you were an old Pepe! Granted, I had my one later than most of my friends, but you are in my relative age group, so what up with this being so old?? You are in the greatest age group going now, at least that's what the marketers tell us! You are just so lucky, you have kids, grandkids, and your whole life still in the palm of your hands. You go, kiddo! I am envious. I only had my one, and now I have to wait forever for grandbabies.
