Got this email today and found it was unfounded. So, you basically have 2 people rating it poorly, then scaring other people away. Anyhow, here is the original email and my test\response. We deal with these all day, but I found this one particularly interesting as it went right to user reviews. I even downloaded this from download.com for kicks and have attached my screenshot and the readme file which makes no mention of removing ads. Finally, I checked the license agreement. Of course these people reviewed version 2.0, though I dont recall it being in there, either. So, you can see where programs changing constantly, alongside inexperienced users complaining, makes comments a bad idea. Anyone who has tech support experience knows how people can go off, unjustly because in their mind, they are right.

    Hi,
Thanks for the email. MajorGeeks tests before offering programs and does not allow user comments. This highlights why we do this. I have retested the program, can find no ads, no spyware or any mention of either in the EULA. It has an uninstaller both in your start menu and in add\remove programs. It is often scary to accept user reviews from people who are infected and probably have no idea how they got infected. I suspect this is the case here. While RemoveIt is a decent program, its is not on my list of top 10 programs I would run to try and remove a specific virus or spyware. See attached screenshots :)

Cons: This problem is not free, and offers NO uninstaller! From the readme file it irrevocably installs on your system: "This software is completly free only you must purchase if you wan't to remove ads."

    'Nuff said.

The following line from the readme.txt convinced me of the quality of the program,

"This program is specific because he detects malicious files and viruses that many other popular programs does not detect"

You are aware that in the whole world there are other languages besides English, right?

Anyhow, heres a 2.93 rated program I gave a pick today. I guess a "geek" is supposed to hate AOL period. Whatever.

I guess it takes a long time to lose a "bad reputation" that people have (justifiably or not) built up about a company/individual/product.

Conversely, you can lose a good image overnight though ;)

I understand that there are more languages than English. (some of the best programs come from other countries)

However, if you are going to be marketing toward predominantly English speaking people, then at least get it proof read, whether or not English is your first language.

True, if they have access to anyone, since its probably a single programer. I have offered in the past to people to correct things, but its time consuming and a pita, so I rarely offer anymore, which could explain why they have so much trouble.

    :)

Maybe I'm being pedantic, but I judge things by how they first appear. (which is what most people do whether they admit it or not)

Imagine if MajorGeeks was released to say, a German or Chinese market, and it was full of grammatical or other errors. I somehow doubt it would have the same success or popularity.

Again, maybe it's just me, but I don't believe in loose ends ends, and with the resources available to people these days, they don't have any excuses. (we are talking English here, not some strange dialect)

Normally, I would agree, an exception is someone who takes the time to offer a free program, I can live with some spelling errors, etc., but I am the same as you :)

    Yeah, that's a good point if it's free. ;)

Huh...what...excuse me, but I have nothing to do with this!! :p

Believe me though...I totally understand where you are coming from!! Unfortunately, there's not much that can be done to sway that raving lunatic that is bitching, even though he has no idea what he is talking about!!

I have been looking for the time before you asked for feedback on this program. I loaded on the Mrs Junkbox computer and it did not work with The Screen Magnifier. She tried for 20 mins and then went back to FF telling me she could not use it.

I agree with your prior that the name AOL chases some away, but the Anti-AOL Nazis ought to at least remember who owns the Netscape they covet....

Thanks for the post MA. These email rants are always good for a chuckle.

Guess as we all know its easier to blame someone else when something goes wrong, than to look closer to home!

Re: Why we don't allow user reviews\comments

Gotta love these emails..always good for a laugh and it amazes me that these people actually expect to be taken seriously with their profound spelling errors and grammatical skills that are on the level of a child in primary school. At least the little kids are eager and willing to improve on those skills.:)

Bottom line, I have read reviews on various sites from newegg to zdnet to download.com & others. And, I do so purely for entertainment purposes. People try out software, or don't and rate it just by who's name is behind it, they buy a piece of hardware and automatically think they know all there is to know about it and can not only rate it BUT! compare to others pieces of hardware they've never used. It's hysterical! No way can they be taken seriously!

The only reviews I take seriously are those done by people I know and trust. People who have proved time and time again that they really do know what they are talking about...such as a chosen few here at MG.:) Other than that..y'all can go fly a kite.;):D

I like you Abby dont take much notice of those types of reviews at all and as you say would rather read a review from a website or magazine I trust to give me both the Pro's and Con's in an objective way... or listen to friends opinions.
