So I have a legal and validated copy of XP Pro, I download IE7 from Microsoft and the darn thing wont run, as in install, at all, no matter how many times I download. What is going on? Am I missing something very obvious?

Does your current version of IE work? (IE6)confused

Also, could you look at something. Go to Start.
    Run
    type
    appwiz.cpl

When the window pops up. Look to the left and click the third button from the top.
    Add/Remove Windows Components.
In the new Window that opens, can you verify that Internet Explorer option has a check mark by it?

Yup, IE6 works, and there is a check mark next to IE in the Add/Remove Windows Components section.

i had exactly the same problem,i could download it but not make it run i can not remember the exact wording but on the download screen it asks about downloading updates all i had to do was uncheck the box, download, run and then update can't guarantee it will do the same for you but i tried many times to run it and this was the only thing that worked.

That was a good call, I have already tried that. It did not work for me, though I can see that it would help. Im not sure what the problem is, but if as I suspect it is with the registry files, then it is a no-go area for me.

I had no problems installing it, just didn't like it, and set all back to IE6 with updates. What firewall/anti virus are you running? Do you have TeaTimer (spybot) or Zone Alarm 6.5 running? Might also have to do with security settings or permissions. Imagine you have read this:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917925/en-us
You could reset security settings, but I would hope that isn't necessary.
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=313222
Why do you want to install IE7, firewall/anti virus not up to the task of providing security? Try an alternative browser or operating system.
Here is another Microsft link to check out:

    This worked for someone else:
First, Control Panel, User Accounts Create a New User, and make them an Administrator. Second, logout. Login as the New User. Restart the Computer. Hit the F8 function key early and often as the computer restarts. You should shortly see an Advanced Boot Optioins Menu, of which one Choice is Safe Mode with Networking. Choose that. Logon as the New User. Start, Run, CMD C: CD \ fix_reg.cmd When this finishes, try to install IE 7 again.

    Newer isn't always better...

er AVG anti virus AVG anti spyware, Zone Alarm firewall. i will run through the other options later today. I am really trying to get rid of v6 simply because I cant reset my HP to yahoo and I cant reset my internet security options for some reason and its driving me mad. I have downloaded Mozilla which I hate [sorry mozilla fans] and I thought I might be able to get round these probs in IE7. otherwise I might uninstall IE6 and try a reinstall there.

In my experiences, that is usually a sign of malware. Have you gone through the steps on here concerning the cleaning of your PC?

Well no.... however, my computer crashed yesterday morning I wiped the HDD reinstalled the OS and everything last night so I think it is probably clean. I also had the same problem last time I installed this XP SP2. I also have XP with SP1 which has no problems at all, except I cant download IE7 becasue that requires SP2, hence me going with SP2 this time.
