Check that Remote Assist is not disabled in both System Properties > Remote and in the Services list.

Easiest is Start -> Run -> type in "msconfig" -> Click OK -> Choose Services tab, scroll down to Remote stuff.

I seem to recall a KB article that stated if two people had routers that this feature would not work. Regardless of if DMZ was set.

    It will work over routers.

Port 3389 must be opened and forwarded to the respective computers.

    DMZ should work, too.

But it wont allow you to enable it, so the best place would be

    Start,run, services.msc

Also, software firewalls will cause a problem too. So disable those.

I know it will work over routers in general but this article specifically stated tthat if BOTH parties had routers, that this feature would not function. I remember this because I was trying to do the same thing with a friend of mine last year and ran into the same problem.

    I see.

    I found this:

Basically it boils down to that both NAT devices must support UPnP, or it won't work.

The firewalls have to be stopping communication then.

    Disabling dsoesn't always stop them.

Can you the computers ping each other?

tell me how to do it and i will try. do i need the IP number for the other computer? if so is it cmd>run>ping**************** where ********** is the number of the other pc? if not can you tell me how to do it

Yep, you need the IP address of each computer.

    Start, run, cmd.exe

    ping "ip address"

    Minus the quotes.

it looks like i can ask for remote assistance and the person i ask can view my screen, but when they ask me for remote assistance i get a box saying "Remote Assistance connection could not be established because the remote host name could not be resolved. Please try again."
