I finally got hands on a good graphics card its a:
ATi Radeon HD 2600 PRO 512 MB

the game that im still tryin to run is Assault Rigs and its powered by ATi RAGE which is differ cards but there made from ATi which it weird because there both used by ati cards. ive got the one file it needs and its been the same error every time "Could not initialise CIF" (ati3dcif.dll).

Someone help me the ps1 version doesnt look as good...........

You might be better off trying to run that in DosBox. The file the game is asking for is the one used for 3D way back when, when that game came out. You will either need to roll back to a very old driver (the game is from 1995, so unless you're in XP, you're going to have problems finding one), or resign yourself to playing it on your Playstation. Sorry... backwards compatibility only goes so far.

It's around the same performance as the nVidia Geforce 8600M GS 256MB or the 8600GT 512MB. They came out around 06 I think, if you're asking how good it was then... I'd say about a 6-7/10, nowadays it's more like a 2-3/10 due to the fact that if you wanted to play modern PC games on it you'd be looking at minimum graphic settings on a tiny screen resolution.

You can pick up a fairly descent graphics card for about £80-£100 in the Uk.

    Hope this helped :)

I'm horrible with ATI, that's why I didn't reply earlier, but this puts it in perspective. I agree, you're a 6/10 for everyday use. For games you're a 4/10. If you want to play games on this machine you need to either upgrade, or stick with the older ones.

I'm not great with nVidia either lol But ATI have followed nVidia generations since the 3870 X2 was compared to the 8800. It goes a bit like this:

    8800 = 3870 X2
    GTX 260 = 4870
    GTX 295 = ... Atomic 4870 X2
    GTX 480 = Toxic 5870 2GB ver
Toxic 5970 4GB (current king) :-D (eyefinity 6, cheaper than GTX 480, Runs cooler, less power consumption) Winner IMO http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?leg=&psn=000101&pid=340

I agree with Mimsy, you either need to stick to very old games or upgrade. Though from what I have seen the 2600 Pro comes in AGP & PCI-E versions, if it's the 512 ver you'd need a compleatly new PC probably, if not PCI-E cards are easy to replace.

Here's a comparison between the two interfaces (card side): http://img.tomshardware.com/us/2004/11/10/thg_graphics_card_buyers_guide/pic-agp-pcie-cards.jpg

Here's a tyipical AGP slot (Motherboard side): http://www.techimo.com/forum/attachments/graphics-cards-displays/1450d1017242505-no-agp-slot-agp.jpg

And this is a tyipical PCI-E slot (Motherboard Side): http://i4memory.com/reviewimages/motherboards/dfi/LP_UT_X48_T3RS/pcie/DFI_UT_X48_T3RS_PCIE.jpg

The slots can vary in colour, but not in size/shape.

    Hope this helps :)

    without card: 956MB
    with crad: 1024MB

Off topic, but the only reason the ATI 5970 beats the NVidia GTX480 is because the 5970 is a dual card. It has 2 GPUs on a single card, so it is essentially two 5870s stuck together so comparing it to a GTX480 is not a fair comparison. Compare it to two GTX480s and the NVidia cards will destroy the ATI 5970. Compare an ATI 5870 to a GTX480, and again, the NVidia GTX480 wins. (this is strictly performance and gaming frame rates only; if you compare heat and power usage, the GTX480 is hotter and uses more power than an ATI5870; I think the ATI5970 power usage is about the same as GTX480, I don't know about the 5970 heat output)

You get your RAM back because the card is freeing up the memory previously used by the on-board video. The on-board video was actually set to 64mb with a 4mb "buffer". (I know "buffer" is the wrong word, but I don't remember the real word). So: 64mb + 4mb = 68mb; 1024mb - 956mb = 68mb.
