Why won't WinTotal install on Vista Business?

ok.. so every bit of history I might think is helpful:

Hard drive crashed. Installed new one. Installed XP. Installed upgrade to Vista Business (32 bit). turned off firewall. Installed all updates on vista. Attempted to install Ala Mode "Aurora" Wintotal. Immediately got this error message in a little white window:

"Wintotal can only be installed on operating systems that were released on or after 2000."

Crossed fingers. Tried again. Same message. Went to safe mode. Crossed fingers and toes. Tried again. Same message.

Anyone have any words of wisdom that will help me get this up and running? NEED to be working on this program yesterday and Ala Mode tech support doesn't open until Monday! :cry

Just tried again making sure to do what you've suggested, but still no luck.

So do you think the cause might lie with Microsft then, and do you think they'd do anything to help me if I called and waited 3 hours on their tech support line or would they just pass me off on Ala Mode anyway?

I need to get this fixed but can't imagine spending the money for a full version of Vista, especially after spending the money on the upgrade ($200) just yesterday. Add that to the $100 on the new hard drive and I'm wondering if I dont have to buy a whole new computer just because my hard drive failed!

For someone who claims to love computers so much, I sure do hate them.
    :(

Thanks for trying plodr. I've poured over those sites, believe me. lol

The 24/7/365 platinum tech support thing is a ton of money. We have gold, which gives use mon-fri 8-6.

And I've installed this program before- many many times.. with no problems on XP, Vista, and 2000. Usually it's not a problem, goes right in. Then you move your files and sigs and stuff over... well it's a no-brainer. But this stupid error message.. argh!

I'm just about to call them now, I'm sure they will have some goofy fix (stand on one foot with your nose plugged while holding these four keys simultaneously and reciting the gettysburg address) that I could never come up with on my own.

Here goes nothing. Thanks for trying! I'll post and let you know if it's something helpful to the next poor schmuck with this problem.

    Alrighty... final update.

When I called tech support, they said my disc, about a year old, must have a version "not quite compatible with all versions of Vista". So they suggested I could download a copy of Aurora or any other product we've purchased through them, from the myaccounts page of alamode.com under downloads (which frankly, I didn't even realize was there).

I downloaded the 500MB file, and it installed just fine. I will say I had trouble keeping the download going though.. apparently if you dont stay "active" in that page while it's downloading.. the server resets and cancels your (giant!) download. ugh.

If only this had happened while tech support was still open... this wouldn't have been any big deal. (or if I paid more for the highest level of tech support I guess). Murphy's Law. :)

Is there a way for you to burn what you've downloaded to disk in case you need to reinstall it?
It still surprises me that most companies assume all computer users have access to a good broadband connection without download limits! Even with all that, getting a large download can still be a problem.

Thanks for reporting the final outcome. If any one else uses the software and has the same problem, your solution will help.

Yeah, I put a copy on my external and plan to burn to disc. I know.. I'm one of the poor saps that can't get decent internet due to location. Well.. I can.. but it costs a LOT.

Satellite has too much latency and uploads are... pfft. I get my internet by radio.. and for half the speed of cable, it costs double the price. Yuck. (But it still performs better than satellite for my needs).

Hopefully it will help someone.. was worth a try!
