Why Would Microsoft Do This?

Microsoft has just updated Windows on my PC even though I have it set up to a metered connection so it should not update without my permission. In addition to updating my PC why has it removed all the icons I had on the taskbar and why has it lost all the files I currently had saved to my desktop? At a guess I reckon about 30 files have been lost.

Can't answer as to why but if you really need or want those files run 'Recuva'. Choose 'search for non-deleted files' and 'restore folder structure' along with 'deep scan' and you may get some files back! This takes some time, so be patient.

Can you locate the latest update and KB please. What was the date it installed??

And have you tried to system restore the last time it restored??

FTR, metered connection does NOT mean updates will be blocked until you give it permission. It just means some updates will delayed and some lower priority updates may not be downloaded. But priority updates will still come.

You asked 'why would Microsoft do this?'. This is why -

Looks like you activated that option.

All that does is what the OP has already done via the update options - it defers updates by up to 35 days, and if it hasn't been reversed in that time then the same problem would arise again - updates would be forcibly downloaded regardless of any charges.

But only high priority updates and IMO, that just makes sense. If a computer is connecting to the Internet, important updates needs to be applied. History has shown some users will put off important updates forever and that is just unacceptable because it puts others at risk.

Microsoft knows they are going to get blamed for upsetting someone, regardless. They would much rather have a few people complain about their computers staying current and more secure - even if they experience over-use charges - than getting blamed for allowing a computer to become compromised, and then a threat to others. And IMO, that is the right decision.

Same here. I'm fully in favour of MS policy of forcing users to adopt high priority updates.

Well, that's your right but it is really not a good reason. With few exceptions, it is the fastest, leanest, most secure Windows yet. And with just a few tweaks, if you don't like the looks of W10, you can easily make it look and feel like W7.
