i need help choosing wich Windows to get for my new PC (well he's not really new it's my dad's old PC but it will be nice having a third computer),

    here are the specs
pentium 2 400mhz(i'd rather athlon but it's free so...)
RAM = 128 or 256mb SDR dont remember
HD 8gig (ill update to at least 20gigs)
    32mb (sdr?) video card
thats all i remember. i had thought Win XP but i'm not sure if it will run good, i had aslo thought about windows NT but my dad told me to get win98 but i dont like 98 ...

anyways wich is the best for this PC?

As long as you have 256mb of RAM, I would say to go with Windows XP.

If not, the best choice would be Windows 2000.

But, seeing as how this will be a third computer, why not take a look at Linux? You have two other Windows computers to play with already, it makes sense to me that you try something different on this one.

my third computer is a p1 running on win98, have to format it...

no opinions on win NT? is it good. i hadn't thought about win 2000 tough.
i dont know anything about linux and i'm not sure i wanna learn a new os.

Dec 15, MS is dumping win98 completely as a result from the legalities between SUN and MS. So don't buy Win98. Go to win2k or XP.. because you won't get ANY updates.

anyways , i dont need support for that PC, it probably wont be connected to the internet, but ive heard win NT was stable.

For red hat i know its free but is it easy to learn?

RedHat is dead for the desktop. I suggest Suse or Mandrake if you have to use Linux on a machine for someone who is not familiar with computers. Should do internet, email and support most of what the average person needs to without hassles.

P.S I disagree on XP, I wouldnt be caught dead slapping XP on a 400 mhz, maybe they never tried? Between the slower NTFS file system and processes, it will be a horrible pig. All the RAM in the world does not make the cpu accept instructions any faster.

ok, so ill take either win2k or win xp or some linux os...

I slapped XP on a p2 300 with 128 and I was actually surprised at how well it ran.. it ran slow.. but not nearly as slow as I expected. Of course I turned off all the un-necessary garbage to help.

I agree with M A, I think Win2k would be ok on that machine, but if I were to have a spare machine I would try to dabble with linux, maybe load Open Office as well....all free! Nothing to lose!

Red Hat is dead, but Fedora lives on as its bastard child ;)
