I have a wireless home network with 3 active machines on it. My problem is that my kids play Warcraft 3 on it and they are bitching that it lags and disconnects them. It is an 8.11b Siemens speedstream wireless/dsl router. I don't want to go out and buy a 8.11g router if it is going to do the same thing. Is this something that is common to wireless? Is it 8.11b? Is it the brand? (yes I'm a sucker for sales). Would 8.11g solve the problem? What brand would you recommend?

    Thanks,

    William

I play games over a high-quality D-link router and encounter the same problem, except it just totally disconnects at times. I think it's just the nature of wireless.

    Are you running appliances?

If you're using 803.11b, you're running on 2.4 GHz, I believe it is; the same frequency many appliances run--read: microwave, cordless phone!

So, keep an eye out that those kinds of electronic devices are not running when you're wirelessing. (No, you don't have to worry about this issue with 803.11g; it's a much higher freq.)

    Well, excuuuuuuse me!

    MY COMPUTER DOESN'T HAVE A "2"!

You know, as I was writing that post, I thought something wasn't right. I was thinking that maybe I had the b and g MHz reversed. But, well ... sorry!

now i have to get you on this too... If your computer doesn't have a 2, then how'd you write that two?

    2

We knew what he meant--we should be blaming the damn people who develop this shit. :) Why didn't they just call it 11 Mbs WiFi or something like that?

    phone

I had heard about the phone frequency problems--but it doesn't seem to correlate with the disconnects--unless it interferes even when the phone isn't in use. I was thinking about trying 802.11g for a while and taking everything back if it does the same thing. What do you think? Is it worth trying? I don't want to hassle it if chances are that it will be the same. I will just tell me kids that they have to f***in live with it.

    HA! NOT SO QUICK, MR_FLEA

Ah, but I borrowed it from the "lab" computer--read: my fellow office worker! (She can't call me on it either, because my phone doesn't have any 5s!)

    So there! :D

Hmm! Switch to g instead of b? Well, only if it was understood that it's "trial," and you'd like to return the merch if it doesn't work.

    I mean, that's what I'd do!

geez how much other stuff is missing assorted numbers (and maybe letters)?

    WELL, ACTUALLY ...

I got that idea--missing numbers and letters--from a comedian named Steven Wright. He did stand up and then was on Mad About You here and there.

The guy was histerical! He did this one joke about his friends asking him why he never got together with them or something. The punchline was that his calendar had no 5s. Then he says that his friends asked him why he didn't call them. He said that his phone doesn't have any 3s (or something like that). Too funny ... the way he told it.

"I once walked by a pizza place that sold pizzas by the slice. This guy was tossing small triangles into the air ...."

    settings

I use 64-bit Wep.No MAC filtering and no port forwarding. I have the basic firewall enabled. From the LAN it works great but the WiFi sucks. So I don't think it is the firewall. I don't see anything called "association controlled." What is that?

I get like 1 Mbps download speed on my LAN connected PC. My son is only getting 300 at the most. I was going to check him for spyware (I'm pretty sure he's clean) but the download for 4 Mbs program was over an hour.
