I use SpyBot and it always reports WildTangent but I don't delete it because my wife & son like playing the games on Earthlink powered by WT. Now, however, I've run a-squared and it reports C:\ProgramFiles\WildTangent\...\SystemConfig0100.dll as _malware_.
So just how bad is Wild Tangent and am I crazy to tolerate it even in the name of domestic tranqulilty?

More serious: SpyBot New.Net, says it can't remove because the files are in use, please restart the computer. I restart my PC, SpyBot launches before anything else, it finds New.Net -- and can't delelte it because the files are already in use, please restart the computer. GRRR!!

    help!

You need to remove those files from safe mode. You can not delete files that are in use. Optionally, you can try ctrl alt delete and end the process, but often times it restarts. This is explained in our tutorials.

There are different levels of spyware. Wild Tangent, as far as I know, only collects anonymous data, browser type, operating system. This type of data helps people improve products and services and has been easily collected almost since the dawn of the internet. More on their policy here:

It is best to try first to remove New.Net through the Add/Remove Programs menu, as it could mess up your winsock.
    From SpywareGuide.com:
Manual removal: The NewDotNet software places a reference in Windows' Add/Remove Programs dialogue.

It is recommended that you use this to remove the program, as explained in more detail in the New.Net FAQ. DO NOT simply delete the DLL, as it tampers with the default Winsock settings and manual removal will cause you to lose Internet access.

The Add/Remove dialogue is available by clicking Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs.
    New.Net's removal instructions:

I like where they helpfully put removal instructions:

That's what I figured when it showed up on SpyBot but a-squared reporting it as "malware" threw me -- it never occurred to me to go back to their privacy statement -- Duh!

    thanks
