Will I lose my partition if I reinstall?

I'm going to be reinstalling Vista Home Premium on my Compaq computer by the restore discs that it had me initially make when I first got the computer. My question is when I go to reinstall Vista will I lose my partition that I made for my music?

These are the drives I have:

    Code:
    COMPAQ (C:)
    FACTORY IMAGE (D:)
    Music (E:) [I]this is the partition I made.[/I]

The E: drive is a 40gb partition and I really don't think I'll have enough DVDR discs to back up the entire partition which is why I'm hoping it won't be lost.

No, the system restore (D:) should restore (and completely wipe) onto the C: drive. Move anything you want to save to the E: partition.

Side note, if that drive dies, you lose everything, but a second backup drive (internal or external) and\or back to DVD occasionally. You'll thank me later ;)

Just make sure it doesn't ask if it is okay to wide the drive itself, and just the C:\ drive. ;)

Hmm..I'll have to think about what to do. I do have an external 80gb drive but it's pretty much completely full. I do understand what you are saying that I would need to back it up eventually, but I just went and backed up the entire 200gb drive excluding the partition of music. That took a lot of DVDRs as it was. I think I may have to invest in another external hook up so I can hook up my other 30gb hard drive and use that as my music drive instead of creating a partition off of the C drive of the main 200gb drive.

Just like to see you back up first to be sure, as thefool pointed out and I forgot, if the restore CD is set to restore it back to default single partition, you could lose it all.

My old compaq (about year 2000 and a 40gb HD) the restore discs took over the whole HD formatted it and gave 80% of space to C: and 20% to D:. No other options. I think I might have even put in an 80gb drive and it did the same thing 80% to C: and 20% to D: even though D: only needed about 4gb. I'd be careful if you use the discs and read the screens carefully before deciding to commit. 30gb of music is a lot to lose.

Maybe check out HP.com and get the manual or read up on the site for the recovery options. Things may have changed since drives are so much larger than back then but be careful, I think the recovery disks still create a D: drive and may still use the 80/20% rule.
