Will July 29 Be The End Of This?

Just did a small update to 8.1 The update mostly didn't apply to my system 'cept for maybe better crash dump reports. But while there I noticed another small update. KB3173040. Another reminder of last chance and on viewing details, it gave all the steps for installing or rejecting the Win10 update. When will it end? After the 29th can we turn automatic updates back on? Will MS still d/l Win10 and then want to bill for $110?

I'll gladly take 10 when it comes on a comp I buy with it on it. These comps here have time invested in making them the way the user wants it to be. It's personalization. One comp is on 7 since the wife and kids and grandkids know it and love it and it is used more than most phones or tablets. This 8.1 I use has all my music, tools, d/l'd software ,iso's and WAIK and Window Kits and not to mention pdf's and other reference material I use for work and off-time. I would be mad to lose it overnight to a download.(if I forgot to turn it off)

I would enjoy being able to let the guard down. Is MS worried there won't be enough new comps sold to fulfill their dreams? Are they worried of tabs and phones eating into the share of OS's in use? After the 29th can we be expected to be left alone in our old school OS misery?

The reason MS wants everyone on 7 and 8 to go to 10 is very clear and has been from the start. There never ever has been a mystery about it. It will make OS maintenance life much easier and straightforward for them, as 10 is the LAST unique OS they will ever introduce. They have an excellent business case for doing that, and that is why they offered it FREE for a year.
For the vast majority of users the upgrade goes fine. Anyone even remotely experienced with MS operating systems would know to back up their data to an external drive first so only someone who didn't know or didn't enquire or research the issue would risk losing any data, and even that is rare and mostly with systems that were in a poor maintenance state to start with. And no one regularly helping other users on a forum would be in that silly position.

Doesn't even address will this be over on the 29th. The Windows I have used over the years never came out of the box ready to most things normally wanted. Play music good. Play video good. Read pdf's. Recover lost data. Anti-virus? There's too many things an owner might want to do to be put in the OS. What of writing music. Digital photo libraries already established. 3-d printing already set up. No reason to start all over when you can just get another box. The number of add on utilities in the free and paid market attests to what a bare windows lacks. Once personalized to the owner's likes the machines and 7 and 8 work good. What's the saying that been used so many times - Don't fix what ain't broke.- To rebuild to a new OS for no other reason than a new OS when everything is doing what's desired is beyond me. I have backups of everything in case of need. When I want 10 I will go get it and then I will add on to that everything I need to do what I want a computer for.

Yeah it will make the maintenance and upkeep for them easier. But some of us have been maintaining our own to our needs and wants. How many computers do you reckon aren't connected to the internet. And some of them have been kept up by family or friends. And will never see the light of 10. Are these computers all of a sudden broke?

It will because that is the date the free offer ENDS. After that if a user wishes to upgrade an existing system they will have to purchase an upgrade option.
Of course MS will probably advertise suggesting people do that but they wont put any software on a system to force it, as that would patently be ILLEGAL.
Windows 10 out of the box, or with a clean upgrade, works exactly the same 'out of the box' like every other OS did.
80% of MS OS users don't end up doing almost anything you are suggesting - they buy the system then use it.
I see a contradiction in what you are saying. If you don't want Windows 10 then don't upgrade it on an existing system. You wont then face the rare and slightly exaggerated problems you posit. It's very simple.
I've helped people upgrade over 30 systems now, making sure those systems were in a good state before they started the upgrade, and haven't seen a single problem that was not easily overcome on any of them.

EDIT: One other thing I am adding and that is the differences between 7,8 and 10 are actually negligible in almost every way. You misunderstand the core differences.

That statement is incorrect. I said nothing against 10 in and of itself. In fact on new hardware certified for 10 I 'm sure it's great. I don't want it on systems I've already built to my liking and wish them to remain the same. And I hope after the 29th to be able to let the guard down again.

Then I have no idea what the point of this thread was.
You have totally misunderstood the 29 July deadline.
You could have shut the reminders off on DAY ONE via a registry edit. I did it for my 3 systems and everyone I helped, until we were all happy to upgrade.

The point was just in passing conversation. After the 29th. what's next? Are the people at MS worried of OS market share. Are tabs and phones pushing their actions? Open questions looking for other's thought's. Don't be bothered.

Oh. - and your icon is really inappropriate.

A deadline is a deadline. I thought that was obvious. Once that has passed why would anything else happen when it was no longer free? They can't legally force you to upgrade for money.
All the things you mention about MS motivations were discussed in 1000s of articles all over the net (and here) like a year ago. I'm sure that conversation followed its course to a natural end way back.

But since the 29th ain't here yet we don't know. Like I said 'Don't be bothered'

Ok when I go into my local pub to get a pint of my favourite beer during the 4pm to 8pm slot when it is £1 cheaper, I'll just wait to 8.02pm and say 'Can I still have it cheap?'
I know what they'll say.

So, you think that on the 29th at uhm let's sat 12:00 Redmond time it's all over. And no more trying to update anything. That would be nice. From then on MS could just let everyone keeps their OS as it is and let the rest buy 10 on a download with credit card or from a box store or tech shop the way things have always been done before or else get it with a new comp. Took a lot to get here.

You're just being facetious now, which is at least amusing.
But you never know, Microsoft might start spending $$millions on advertising in the next 10 days saying 'WINDOWS 10 FREE UPGRADE EXTENDED!!!'
I'll let you know if I see it ;)

Just went to check updates. The reminder update is gone. Went to details on a couple offered updates and the banner across the top reads ' the free upgrade has ended. to learn how to get windows10 -click-'. So I go look. Only offer right now is Win 10 Home - $119.00 download. But the dropdown also has a Win10 Home on USB (English) with free standard delivery for the same price and possible promo codes. I'm more interested in the usb to save it for any new builds later on. People without a proper internet connection will possibly use this route also.

One thing I noticed on the offer page was the first big picture ad was saying " The best way to enjoy Windows 10 is on a new device". Now I'll agree with them!

Let me keep my 7 and 8 and - Windows 10 - I'll see you later!
