last night my computer went to blue screen and said it was doing a CHKDSK.
It started and 3 stage process step 1 said that it was unreadable with numbers like 89036-39, step 2 checked indexes- which deleted files and then went on to recovering orhand file such as "SQ2FAO~1.SQM 78135 directory file 5". step 3 did a security descriptors such as inserting data attributes 18936 and 24967, then it did CHKDSK verifying USN Journal, then Repairing USN Journal file record segment, then USN verification completed at which time the computer stopped at this screen. At a hard start and pressing F8 at start up it went to a normal Start up window. All files seemed to be empty and almost all programs could not be found are would not start. The computer was shut off. Upon trying to start up the computer again a screen comes up at start up and says "Windows could not start error in the software. Report the problem as load needed DLLs for Kernel"

This is on a laptop running windows XP.

Can you advise what might be the next best thing to try or any suggestions as to what might have caused this.

    Thanks
    Dennis

I have no real suggestions as to how to fix this problem. From your description of CHKDSK, it sounds like the file system had some serious problems when the blue screen hit and CHKDSK started. I know this may be rubbing salt in to the wound, but you should NEVER restart or shut down a PC in mid CHKDSK. Many times CHKDSK will look like it has locked up and it isn't doing anything, but it should always be left alone. I have seen CHKDSK take over 14 hours on really messed up hard drives. I was tempted to reboot, but knew it could be disasterous..... maybe try running CHKDSK again from the command prompt (or if running Vista, boot to your Vista disc). If running XP, try a safe repair install from the XP disc.... it may not work but it's worth a try....
    Good luck!

They say salt water helps wounds dlb :p

You have obviously tried to boot in safe mode then?? If not try that, if you have put in your XP cd, press R when prompted and when you get to the CMD type chkdsk /r Then try to boot to safe mode again.

now that i have tryed to rebot in safe mode another screen pops up with:

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\hal.dll
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\KDCOM.DLL
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\BOOTVID.dll

"error in software". also states "load needed DLL's for Kernel".

At this point i tryed inserting my recovery disk and it would not read.

Any info on what this might be would be helpful

    Thanks
    Dennis
