Will the Nvidia GT 630 or GT 610 fit/work on the Acer X3400?

    so, here is the deal:

I wanna buy a decent graphics card for mi Pc, and, a friend told me i could get a GT 630 or a GT 610 for a really, really reasonable price (both brand new).

My main doubt is, does either or both come with low profile brackets? and, will my PSU be enough?

    Thanks for the Help.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

You can by both in low profile or convertible to low profile.

Better to buy something more recent and capable though - HD7750 uses similar wattage (~55W) to the GT 630 and is 2-3x better at gaming. $93 gets you this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161418

Can't tell whether your PSU will run it, you didn't fill us in on the details ;)

i believe is a 220w, and $95 is a bit off my budget.

With an unknown brand/quality 220W PSU (how old?), it would be pushing your luck to move to a GT 630 (extra ~50W draw) and a GT 610 would give little improvement for gaming. Better to save some more cash, I think.

well, the GT 630 2Gb is $45, that gives me some more money to (maybe) a new PSU.

According to AMD, the HD7750 System Requirements call for a 400W supply as a minimum.

The GT 630 pulls 65W max and 300W minimum PSU recommendation.

Since ALL power supplies lose capabilities with age, and since OEM supplied PSUs tend to be sized for the power requirements of the parts they come with - that is, little to no expansion/upgrade headroom from day one, and since your current PSU starts out insufficient, you must NOT upgrade your graphics without upgrading your PSU.

i think i might go t the local shop today and ask about some PSU and GFX cards i have in mind.

by the way, i'm doing this for 2 reasons:

1.- the computer runs fine some games, but not at full/high settings, so it's a little annoying (i'm not a hardcore gamer, but i do like games to be fluid)

2.- there's a game, coming out next month (September 13th, to be precise)
    These are the system requirements:

    Minimum:
    OS: Windows XP
Processor: Intel Pentium4 2.0 GHz and up
    Memory: 1 GB RAM
Graphics: GeForce 9500 GT ,VRAM: 256MB and up
    DirectX: Version 9.0c
Hard Drive: 5 GB available space
Sound Card: DirectSound, DirectX9.0c Compatible Audio

    Recommended:
    OS: Windows7
Processor: Intel Core i5 2300 and up
    Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: GeForce GTS 250 ,VRAM: 512MB and up
    DirectX: Version 9.0c
Hard Drive: 5 GB available space
Sound Card: DirectSound, DirectX9.0c Compatible Audio

the "Intel Core i5 2300" part seems to be off, since the game is a port from a TaitoTypeX2 arcade, which runs with much less than that.

and again, thanks for the help.

Dig, I suggest the AMD recommendations are because they must cover themselves for their hotter CPU's; they even suggest 400W for their lowest (~25W) graphics card. The HD7750 does not need a power feed from the PSU, that makes it clearly sub-75W and in the same ballpark as the GT 630.

Re the figures for that new game, it feels like the port is badly written, leaning heavily on the CPU to run it; there's little difference between the gaming capabilities of either of those graphics cards, yet quite a big difference between the 2x CPU's.

    Some GPU benchmarks:
    9500 GT
    GT 630
    GTS 250
    HD7750

    CPU benchmarks:
P4 2GHz (there were many different versions, this may be a slower one)
    AMD Athlon II X2 240
    Intel Core i5-2300

For sure they are covering themselves but I don't agree that is why - they cannot know what other components are in the computer. Running hotter may, but does not automatically mean a demand for more power - even though more heat represent more wasted energy. CPUs don't run 100% much of time.

I was happy, if not surprised to see that 300W Seasonic was 80 Plus certified, but it is still small - and leaves little to no room for future expansion. If buying a new PSU for an old computer, I recommend buying one you can use in your next build, or major upgrade - so you don't need to retire a perfectly good, but underpowered PSU.

Plus, when you run a PSU at or near capacity, while a good PSU can handle that all day long and remain totally stable, a lessor quality PSU may not. But also, regardless the quality, pushing a PSU near its max will surely cause the PSU fan to spin full speed - and full loudness - which may be objectionable to some.

Nevertheless, I would not assume I could use less than the manufacturer recommends, without knowing through actual measuring what my true demands were.

As for the games, it is important to note that game developers know most gamers cannot afford $3000+ gaming rigs with 2 or even 3 high-end graphics cards. So they code games to provide decent "game play" on much lessor systems. You will not have the depth, layers, and number of graphical "objects" - especially in the backgrounds and peripheries, but the main character "action" will still be entertaining.

The OP appears cash strapped, he can't raise an extra $50 in 3 weeks to make a decent upgrade; if he could do that, he'd be much happier with the gaming performance by using an HD7750 and a SS300W for much longer than he would by going with a GT 630 - thus giving him longer to put together enough cash for a full upgrade (where the HD7750 might still figure for a time).
